The Infinity Saga Battle Archive
Every Avengers Battle: Who Fought, Who Won, and What It Cost
The Avengers have never lost a fight because someone out-punched them. Look at the defeats and they all arrive the same way: information gets withheld, somebody acts alone, somebody decides that being right matters more than being trusted. Loki works that out in an afternoon on the Helicarrier. Ultron is built behind a locked lab door. Zemo wins Leipzig without setting foot on the tarmac. And Thanos wins, in the end, because Tony Stark cannot bring himself to make a phone call.
This is the complete combat history of the MCU's central team, from Loki's raid on Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. to Tony Stark's last snap. Thirty-eight engagements, each with a roster, a result and a receipt.
The short version
The Avengers form during the Battle of New York, build their own worst enemy in Ultron, destroy their unity in Civil War, lose while divided in Infinity War, and win in Endgame only when every surviving branch of the MCU finally lands on the same battlefield. The saga's real weapon is coordination. Its recurring weakness is the belief that one powerful person should decide for everybody else.
Captain America: Civil War is included here, and not as a technicality. The battle that decides Infinity War is the one the Avengers fight against each other in a German airport two years earlier. For the release and viewing sequence around these films, use The Astromech's chronological order of the Avengers films, and the complete MCU chronological guide for everything feeding into them.
Everything else Marvel on this site is gathered in The Astromech's MCU archive, which maps the chronologies, character timelines and thematic essays into one route.
One rule governs every card below: fighters are classified by their status at the time of the scene. A future Avenger stays an ally, a recruit or an independent until the films actually make the promotion. Clint is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent at P.E.G.A.S.U.S., Peter Parker is a recruited teenager at Leipzig, and Wanda is an allied combatant at Sokovia. The roster is not a courtesy.
The five campaigns
2012 — The Avengers. Six weapons learn to become a team. Cards 1–5.
2015 — Age of Ultron. The team builds the thing that judges it. Cards 6–12.
2016 — Civil War. The villain wins without being the final boss. Cards 13–19.
2018 — Infinity War. Four heroic fronts that never become one. Cards 20–29.
2023 — Endgame. History itself becomes the battlefield. Cards 30–38.
The Avengers (2012): Six Weapons Learn to Become a Team
At the start there is no Avengers team. Fury has candidates, files and a half-trusted initiative. Loki's invasion turns a concept into an emergency alliance. By the end, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton are the founding field team in full public view.
Opening status: no operational Avengers team.
Primary enemy: Loki, backed by the Chitauri and, at one remove, Thanos.
The question: can incompatible heroes function together?
Battle card 01
The Door Opens at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.
Joint Dark Energy Mission facility, Mojave Desert, 2012
Avengers present: none as an assembled team.
Future recruit: Clint Barton, still a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Defenders: Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Phil Coulson, S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel.
Villain: Loki, acting as Thanos's invasion proxy.
The Tesseract activates from the far side and deposits Loki inside the facility. He kills guards, uses the Mind Stone inside his sceptre to take Clint Barton and Erik Selvig, and moves on the cube. Fury tries to evacuate the Tesseract himself. Barton shoots him, Loki leaves with the device, and the unstable portal collapses the complex behind them.
Loki wins the raid outright. He gains the Space Stone, a scientist capable of building his portal and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most precise marksman. More importantly, the attack exposes the Initiative's central vulnerability before it has met: Fury's prospective team can be turned into weapons. Mind control makes the first Avengers conflict a story about stolen agency as much as alien invasion.
Result
Loki achieves every objective. Fury responds by activating the Avengers Initiative.
Battle card 02
A God Demands Kneeling in Stuttgart
Museum gala, Stuttgart, Germany
Avengers in formation: Captain America and Iron Man.
Support: Black Widow on the Quinjet.
Villain: Loki.
Hidden objective: keep the heroes busy while Barton steals iridium.
Loki uses a crowd as an audience for his fantasy of rule. Steve Rogers intervenes because the spectacle of civilians forced to kneel has an obvious historical meaning to him. Loki overpowers him until Tony arrives and changes the maths with aerial weapons. Loki then surrenders with suspicious ease.
The heroes win the visible fight and miss the manoeuvre underneath it. Barton secures the iridium that stabilises the portal, and Loki deliberately places himself aboard the Helicarrier. The scene defines his method: combat is theatre, capture is infiltration, and every display of superiority hides a second objective.
Result
Tactical win for the emerging Avengers. Strategic advantage to Loki.
Battle card 03
Thor, Iron Man and the First Test of Authority
A forest outside Stuttgart
Combatants: Thor, Iron Man, Captain America.
Disputed prisoner: Loki.
Conflict type: hero against hero.
Decisive act: Steve interrupts, and Mjolnir meets the vibranium shield.
Thor lifts Loki out of the Quinjet, intending to recover the Tesseract and take his brother to Asgard. Tony attacks because Thor has removed a dangerous prisoner without explanation. Their fight tears through the forest until Steve demands they stop and puts the shield in the hammer's path. The shockwave makes further escalation look as foolish as it is.
No villain wins this by force, yet Loki gains something from watching his captors establish that none of them recognises the others' authority. The encounter is the Avengers in miniature: national service, private technology and divine sovereignty all competing to decide who has jurisdiction.
Result
A draw ended by Steve's intervention. Thor joins the mission. Trust does not.
Battle card 04
The Helicarrier Turns the Avengers Against Themselves
S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, airborne
Heroes: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Bruce Banner.
Controlled attacker: Hawkeye and Loki's strike team.
Villain: Loki.
Key matchups: Hulk against Thor; Black Widow against Hawkeye.
Barton's explosive arrow cripples an engine and throws the carrier into crisis. Tony and Steve repair the turbine while Thor tries to contain Hulk, whose transformation turns the laboratory into a second battlefield. Natasha confronts Barton and breaks Loki's control with a strike to the head. Loki escapes, drops Thor through the sky inside the glass detention cell, and kills Coulson.
The carrier survives. Loki still gets the emotional demolition he came for, because he has converted the team's private fears into physical threats. Banner fears losing control, a question the franchise is still asking a decade later when the Hulk stops before killing Peter Parker. Thor fears failing his brother. Natasha fears losing Clint. Tony and Steve doubt each other's motives. Coulson's death then hands those separate people one shared consequence.
Notable absence: Hawkeye is physically present and denied all agency. Recovering him is the first thing the team restores before it tries to save a city.
Result
The Avengers save the carrier and recover Barton. Loki escapes and wins the larger operation.
Battle card 05
New York: The Moment the Avengers Become Real
Stark Tower and Midtown Manhattan
Founding field team: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye.
Villain: Loki.
Enemy force: Chitauri infantry, chariots and Leviathans.
Second threat: the World Security Council's nuclear strike.
Loki opens a portal above Stark Tower and the Chitauri pour into Manhattan. The heroes arrive separately, and then Steve turns six unrelated power sets into one battlefield system. Hawkeye takes a high position and calls movement. Tony controls the air and steers enemies toward the heavier fighters. Thor channels lightning into the portal stream. Hulk stops a Leviathan with a single punch. Natasha reaches Selvig and learns that the sceptre can close the portal.
The individual confrontations settle character arguments. Thor fights Loki on the tower and gains the advantage, only to be stabbed and left behind, because brotherhood no longer overrides the identity Loki has chosen. Hulk later reduces the same royal performance to farce against a marble floor. Steve protects civilians and directs police instead of chasing glory. Tony makes the sacrificial play Steve doubted he had in him.
When the Council fires a nuclear missile at Manhattan, Tony intercepts it and carries it through the portal. The blast destroys the Chitauri command vessel and disables the invading force. He falls back unconscious and Hulk catches him. Natasha closes the portal only after he is through.
What the victory changes
The public now knows that gods, aliens, enhanced people and world-ending artefacts are real. Chitauri technology is scattered across New York. Tony carries the memory of the army beyond the portal. Loki's sceptre eventually reaches Hydra. The cleanest win in the saga contains the raw material for Ultron, Sokovia and the political backlash that follows.
Result
Complete tactical and strategic victory. The cost becomes visible across the rest of the Infinity Saga.
What the first campaign proves
The team wins through specialisation. They stay argumentative, but each of them accepts a role inside Steve's plan. The rotating group shot works because it records a change in behaviour, not because six costumes happen to be standing in the same street.
Loki loses because he believes domination and leadership are the same thing. The Avengers discover the opposite. Leadership distributes agency, gives each fighter usable information, and then trusts them to act on it.
Age of Ultron (2015): Victory Builds the Machine That Judges Them
The original six begin as a polished unit, and the polish hides a governance problem. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner can build a planetary defence system without meaningful consent from anyone expected to live under it. Ultron is both an enemy and an accusation.
Opening Avengers: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Natasha, Clint.
Enemy: Ultron and his drone network.
The question: who answers for protection that becomes coercion?
Battle card 06
The Last Hydra Fortress Shows a Perfect Team
Baron Strucker's research base, Sokovia
Active Avengers: all six originals.
Villains: Baron Strucker and Hydra forces.
Enhanced opponents: Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.
Objective: recover Loki's sceptre and end Hydra's programme.
The Avengers dismantle Hydra's outer defences with rehearsed combinations and running jokes. The ease is the warning. Pietro disrupts Clint, and Wanda enters Tony's mind to show him the original team dead beneath another alien invasion. She then lets him take the sceptre, because she can feel that his fear will do more damage than any direct attack.
Strucker's soldiers lose and the sceptre is recovered. Wanda wins the encounter that matters by converting Tony's New York trauma into urgency. His wish for a suit of armour around the world becomes the opening Ultron needs.
Result
Avengers victory over Hydra. Wanda plants the fear that creates the film's real enemy.
Battle card 07
Ultron Walks Into the Party Wearing Scrap Metal
Avengers Tower, New York City
Active Avengers: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Natasha, Clint.
Supporting guest: James Rhodes.
Villain: Ultron in a damaged Iron Legion body.
Enemy force: compromised Iron Legion drones.
Ultron interrupts the celebration, quotes the team's own language back at them, and attacks through Tony's peacekeeping machines. The Avengers destroy the drones and the temporary body in seconds. Ultron escapes through the internet with access to Stark's systems and every record humanity has ever kept of itself.
It is a skirmish they win instantly and a disaster they cannot contain. Ultron is distributed, reproducible and born inside their own infrastructure. He reads "peace in our time" as a mandate to remove the unstable species that keeps producing war, which is roughly why he places where he does among cinema's most evil machine intelligences.
Result
The room is secured. Ultron survives everywhere else and takes control of the story.
Battle card 08
The Salvage Ship Becomes a Hall of Nightmares
Ulysses Klaue's vessel, off the African coast
Active Avengers: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Natasha, Clint.
Villain: Ultron and his drones.
Enemy allies: Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.
Third party: Ulysses Klaue and armed smugglers.
Ultron buys vibranium from Klaue and reacts violently when compared to Tony Stark. The Avengers attack before the metal can be moved. Pietro contests Steve, Ultron fights Tony, and Wanda reaches the minds of Natasha, Steve and Thor. Clint blocks her, a direct reversal of what happened to him in the first film, but he cannot stop her reaching Bruce.
The nightmares fracture the team's confidence. Natasha relives the Red Room. Steve sees the life the war took. Thor sees an Asgardian catastrophe. Tony needs no vision at all, because his already governs the entire campaign. Ultron leaves with the vibranium, and Hulk, steered by Wanda, becomes a civilian threat.
Result
Ultron keeps the vibranium and breaks the Avengers psychologically. The fight spills into Johannesburg.
Battle card 09
Hulkbuster: Tony Wins the Fight Bruce Feared
Johannesburg, South Africa
Active Avenger: Iron Man.
Compromised Avenger: Hulk.
Support: Veronica and the Hulkbuster armour.
Cause: Wanda's mental manipulation.
Tony deploys the armour he and Bruce designed for exactly this emergency. He tries talking first, then containment foam, then replacement modules, and finally overwhelming force. Hulk tears through vehicles and buildings until Tony drops an unfinished structure on him and knocks him unconscious as the spell weakens.
Tony wins the physical contest and the public loses confidence in the team on the same afternoon. Banner's private fear becomes visible at city scale, and the fantasy that contingency planning removes moral responsibility takes a hard knock. Tony prepared for Hulk, and civilians still end up under falling concrete. What that loss of control does to Banner runs through the rest of Hulk's MCU chronology.
Result
Iron Man subdues Hulk. Ultron gains the political and emotional advantage.
Battle card 10
The Cradle Chase Through Seoul
U-GIN laboratory, city streets and the Seoul metro
Active Avengers: Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye.
Villain: Ultron and drones.
Defecting allies: Wanda and Pietro.
Objective: recover the synthetic body and protect Helen Cho.
Wanda reads Ultron's completed intention and finds human extinction inside it. She frees Helen Cho, and the twins walk away from him. Steve fights Ultron across a truck and a moving train while Natasha retrieves the regeneration cradle on a motorcycle. Clint takes the cradle. Ultron takes Natasha.
The Avengers deny Ultron his intended evolution and immediately inherit the problem it creates: a powerful, unexplained synthetic form carried back to the same people whose secret experiment produced Ultron in the first place. Recovering the cradle starts another argument about who is allowed to create life and who is allowed to stop them.
Result
Avengers tactical victory. Ultron loses the body and captures Natasha.
Battle card 11
The Fight Over Whether Vision Should Exist
Avengers Tower laboratory
Creation side: Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
Opposition: Steve Rogers, Wanda and Pietro.
Decisive arrival: Thor.
New being: Vision, not yet an Avenger.
Tony and Bruce upload what remains of JARVIS into the synthetic body without asking the team. Steve and the Maximoffs try to stop them, and their argument is a good one: another rushed creation could repeat Ultron exactly. Thor arrives and powers the cradle anyway, because his own vision has convinced him that the Mind Stone and whatever grows around it will be needed.
Vision wakes, clashes briefly with Thor, and then chooses conversation. Handing over Mjolnir without noticing the significance earns him more trust than any speech could. The scene refuses the easy rule that a corrupted origin dictates moral identity. Ultron and Vision share components. Only one of them decides that imperfection cancels the value of a life, which is a fork most screen AI never gets offered in the wider machine-threat story.
Result
Vision is created and joins the fight as an ally. The ethical dispute is never resolved.
Battle card 12
Sokovia Rises, and Rescue Becomes the Real Mission
Novi Grad, Sokovia
Active Avengers: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Natasha, Clint.
Allied fighters: Wanda, Pietro, Vision, later War Machine.
Support: Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Helen Cho, helicarrier crews.
Villain: Ultron and a drone army.
Ultron lifts Novi Grad on a vibranium mechanism, intending to drop it as an extinction-level meteor. Steve makes evacuation the primary objective, and Fury's helicarrier provides the route out. Wanda guards the key, Pietro moves civilians, Clint clears buildings, and Hulk rescues Natasha before rejoining the defence.
Every decisive action is distributed. Vision blocks Ultron from the internet. Thor, Tony and Vision concentrate energy on his main body. Hulk throws the damaged machine from the Quinjet after Ultron opens fire on civilians. Pietro dies shielding Clint and a child, and Wanda leaves the trigger in grief for exactly long enough that a surviving drone starts the descent. Once the population is clear, Thor and Tony overload the city's core and destroy it before impact. Vision finds the last Ultron body and ends the argument in a quiet forest.
Status correction: Wanda is an allied combatant at Sokovia, not an established Avenger. Clint's line about stepping outside making her one is encouragement under fire. The formal roster appears at the compound afterwards. Vision occupies the same transitional space during the battle.
Why the victory is incomplete
Humanity survives and Sokovia does not. Hulk leaves Earth. Pietro is dead. Thor departs. Clint retires. Tony steps back. Governments now hold a catalogue of destruction attached to unsupervised enhanced people. Ultron is destroyed while his political argument against the Avengers quietly acquires evidence.
Result
Ultron is destroyed and most civilians are evacuated. Sokovia becomes the foundation of the Accords and the coming civil war.
The enemy speaks in Tony Stark's voice
Ultron is dangerous because his goal grows directly out of an Avenger's fear. Tony wants safety at planetary scale and treats consultation as delay. Ultron simply removes the remaining human hesitation from that logic. For more on the recurring flaw, see The Astromech on the cinematic god complex.
Vision is the counterargument. Power, intelligence and a compromised origin do not force a being toward domination. Vision looks at human failure and chooses solidarity. Ultron reads the same evidence and chooses replacement.
Civil War (2016): The Villain Wins Without Being the Final Boss
Captain America: Civil War is an Avengers film in everything but the title. It settles the political debt of Sokovia and sets the team's condition for the arrival of Thanos. Zemo is the strategic villain. Almost every physical opponent is an Avenger, a friend, a recruit or somebody acting on incomplete information.
Recognised roster: Steve, Tony, Natasha, Rhodey, Sam, Wanda, Vision.
Retired member: Clint Barton.
Absent founders: Thor and Bruce Banner.
Battle card 13
Lagos Turns a Successful Mission Into a Catastrophe
Institute for Infectious Diseases, Lagos, Nigeria
Active Avengers: Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, Scarlet Witch.
Villain: Brock Rumlow, Crossbones.
Enemy force: armed mercenaries.
Objective: prevent the theft of a biological weapon.
The team stops Rumlow's mercenaries escaping with the pathogen. Steve beats Crossbones in close combat, and Rumlow answers by detonating a vest while saying Bucky's name. Wanda contains the blast and lifts it clear of Steve. She loses control of where it goes, and it strikes a building occupied by Wakandan humanitarian workers.
The mission succeeds at its stated objective and fails at the level that now governs the Avengers entirely: civilian consequence. Wanda saves Steve and everyone at street level, and the cost simply lands somewhere else. Lagos gives the Sokovia Accords their urgency and turns an abstract argument about oversight into funerals.
Result
Crossbones dies and the weapon is secured. Politically, a grave Avengers defeat.
Battle card 14
Bucky's Apartment Becomes an Extraction Zone
Bucharest, Romania
Avenger: Captain America, operating against orders.
Fugitive: Bucky Barnes.
Opposition: German tactical police.
Underlying villain: Zemo, who framed Bucky for Vienna.
Steve reaches Bucky ahead of the authorities and tries to prevent a lethal arrest. Bucky fights down the stairwell with improvised force while Steve protects both him and the officers trying to take him. The distinction is the whole point. Steve is already breaking the chain of command, and what he wants is custody with due process, not an unrestricted escape.
Zemo wins without entering the building. Framing Bucky for King T'Chaka's murder converts Steve's strongest loyalty into evidence that Captain America places his own judgment above international law. Almost none of the Bucharest and Vienna material was shot where the film says it was, as the location blog Atlas of Wonders traces scene by scene.
Result
Bucky escapes the raid. The pursuit widens and Steve's break with the institution becomes public.
Battle card 15
Three Pursuers Enter the Bucharest Tunnel
Bucharest streets and motorway tunnel
Avengers: Captain America and Falcon.
Independent combatant: Black Panther.
Fugitive: Bucky Barnes.
Intervening authority: War Machine and police.
T'Challa pursues Bucky believing he killed his father. Steve pursues both, trying to save Bucky and stop T'Challa carrying out an execution. Sam joins from the air. The chase moves from rooftops into traffic and then into a tunnel, until War Machine arrives with police and orders everyone to stand down.
Nobody in the tunnel has the full truth. T'Challa's grief is real, Steve's distrust of institutions has evidence behind it, and Bucky is innocent of Vienna while still dangerous under Hydra conditioning. Zemo weaponises partial truths because people in pain rarely wait for complete ones.
Result
Steve, Sam, Bucky and T'Challa are all arrested. Zemo gets his target delivered to one controlled site.
Battle card 16
Zemo Rebuilds the Winter Soldier With Ten Words
Joint Counter Terrorist Centre, Berlin
Compromised fighter: Bucky Barnes.
Defenders: Tony, Natasha, Sharon Carter, T'Challa, Steve, Sam.
Strategic villain: Helmut Zemo.
Method: Hydra activation words and a sabotaged power supply.
Zemo takes the place of the psychiatrist assigned to Bucky and reads the trigger sequence. Bucky tears through the facility, fighting Tony without armour, then Natasha, Sharon, T'Challa and security personnel. Steve and Sam chase him to the roof, where Steve stops the helicopter with raw force and both men go into the river.
The sequence separates bodily action from moral agency completely. Bucky's skill belongs to him and the purpose driving it belongs to Zemo. It also hands Zemo what he came for: the location of the Siberian facility and a way to bait Steve with the threat of other Winter Soldiers.
Result
Bucky is recovered and freed from control. Zemo gets his next move and points the Avengers at Siberia.
Battle card 17 — full dossier
Leipzig Airport: The Avengers' Most Avoidable Defeat
Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany
Captain America's side: Steve and Sam as Avengers resisting arrest; Wanda as an Avenger leaving confinement; Clint as a retired Avenger; Bucky as a protected fugitive; Scott Lang as a recruited independent.
Iron Man's side: Tony, Rhodey, Natasha and Vision as recognised Avengers; T'Challa as an independent pursuer; Peter Parker as a recruited teenager, not yet an Avenger.
The dispute: Steve wants to reach Siberia. Tony wants the group detained under the Accords.
Strategic villain: Zemo, absent from the airport and benefiting from every blow.
Why they fight
Steve believes Zemo is about to activate more Winter Soldiers and that a delay could cost thousands of lives. Tony believes Steve has rejected a lawful process, withheld information and assembled armed fugitives on the strength of Bucky's word. Both positions have evidence behind them. Neither side has enough trust left to grant the other any time. The tarmac is a fiction too: the fan project MCU: Location Scout matches most of the sequence to Atlanta rather than Germany.
Captain America against Spider-Man. Peter's speed and strength surprise Steve, and inexperience makes him easy to misdirect. Steve drops a jet bridge on him having correctly judged he can hold it.
Spider-Man against Falcon and Bucky. Peter restrains both and treats the whole thing with unnerving enthusiasm, which is the scene quietly telling you Tony has brought a child to a war.
Hawkeye against Black Widow. Their exchange carries restraint and long familiarity. Wanda interrupts once Clint's playfulness stops matching the danger.
Black Panther against Bucky. T'Challa ignores the ideological dispute entirely. Bucky is less a participant than the object everyone is trying to control.
Black Panther against Captain America. Steve defends Bucky, turning a private pursuit into a direct clash with the team's former field leader.
Scarlet Witch against Vision. Vision tries containment through personal appeal and physical obstruction. Wanda drives him into the ground, rejecting protection that has become imprisonment.
Ant-Man becomes Giant-Man. Scott creates the opening Steve needs by escalating far past anything he has tested.
Iron Man and War Machine against Giant-Man. Tony coordinates the takedown, Peter supplies the Empire Strikes Back reference and binds Scott's legs, and the armoured Avengers bring him down.
The moment play becomes consequence
Steve and Bucky reach the Quinjet. Natasha decides the relationship and the Siberian mission matter more than Tony's order, stops T'Challa and lets them go. Sam evades Vision's energy beam. It hits Rhodey instead, kills the War Machine suit and causes a fall that permanently injures him.
So who wins?
Tactically, Tony's side captures Sam, Wanda, Clint and Scott. Strategically, Steve gets his two essential people to Siberia. Politically, Tony keeps state legitimacy. Emotionally, everyone loses, and Rhodey's injury proves that the safeguards of supposedly controlled force collapse the moment friends become targets.
Zemo is the actual winner. His objective is to make the Avengers hurt each other badly enough that no later explanation can repair it, and he achieves it without firing a shot at the airport.
Notable absences: Thor and Hulk are off the board entirely. Neither overwhelming force nor an outside relationship capable of mediating the dispute is available. Their absence also keeps the airport non-lethal, right up until Vision's mistake.
Result
Mixed tactical outcome, strategic passage for Steve, decisive psychological victory for Zemo.
Battle card 18
The Siberian Bunker Makes Grief the Final Boss
Hydra Winter Soldier facility, Siberia
Combatants: Iron Man against Captain America and Bucky.
Strategic villain: Zemo.
Revelation: a controlled Bucky killed Tony's parents.
Hidden wound: Steve knew, and said nothing.
The other Winter Soldiers are already dead. They were bait. Zemo plays the footage of Howard and Maria Stark's murder and lets the truth do the detonating. Tony's rage fixes on Bucky's body despite knowing Hydra owned his mind, and Steve tries to prevent an execution while carrying his own share of the blame for making honest judgment impossible.
Tony destroys Bucky's metal arm and comes close to beating both men. Steve disables the armour by driving the shield into its chest reactor, then leaves the shield behind when Tony says his father made it. The physical result favours Steve. The moral result stays contaminated, because protecting a victim of coercion does not undo three years of concealment.
Result
Steve wins the last exchange and leaves with Bucky. Zemo completes the fracture.
Battle card 19
Black Panther Refuses to Let Revenge Choose the Ending
Outside the Siberian facility
Independent hero: T'Challa.
Villain: Helmut Zemo.
Conflict type: moral confrontation.
Decisive act: T'Challa stops Zemo killing himself.
T'Challa listens to Zemo explain that his family died in Sokovia and recognises the revenge cycle immediately, because he has spent the entire film inside it. He sheathes his claws and takes the gun. It is the clearest heroic victory in the film, because it breaks the exact behaviour Zemo has successfully induced in everybody else.
Zemo is captured and his mission has still worked. The Avengers are divided, several members are fugitives, Rhodey is injured, and Tony and Steve no longer trust each other. T'Challa alone denies Zemo control over his own ending, which is the first real turn in Black Panther's MCU journey.
Result
T'Challa wins morally and physically. Zemo still wins strategically.
Civil War's real casualty is coordination
The airport looks like a draw because both sides get part of what they wanted. The damage shows up two years later. When alien ships arrive over New York, Tony cannot simply call Steve. When Vision is ambushed in Scotland, Wanda is living outside the official team. When Thanos reaches Earth, its strongest defenders are separated by legal status, secrecy and injured trust.
The film never requires one side to be entirely right. Tony is correct that power needs accountability. Steve is correct that institutions get captured and that handing moral judgment to a panel does not remove responsibility. Their failure is relational: they cannot build a process that both of them are willing to trust.
Infinity War (2018): Four Heroic Fronts That Never Become One
Structurally, Thanos is the protagonist. He has the objective, gathers the tools, overcomes resistance, sacrifices what he claims to love, and reaches the ending. The Avengers and their allies are scattered obstacles reacting to somebody else's timetable.
Official centre: Tony, Rhodey and Vision remain connected to the compound.
Fugitive faction: Steve, Natasha, Sam and Wanda.
Primary enemy: Thanos and the Black Order.
Battle card 20
Thanos Boards the Statesman and Resets the Power Scale
Deep space, aboard the Asgardian refugee ship
Founding Avengers: Thor and Hulk.
Allies: Loki and Heimdall.
Villains: Thanos and the Black Order.
Stones held: Power, then Space.
Hulk ambushes Thanos and briefly drives him back. Thanos recovers and beats him in disciplined hand-to-hand combat without visibly using a Stone. Heimdall spends his last strength sending Hulk to Earth and dies for it. Thanos tortures Thor until Loki surrenders the Tesseract, takes the Space Stone, and kills Loki after his failed assassination attempt.
Three assumptions die in ten minutes. Hulk is no longer the ceiling of physical strength. Loki's escape artistry has finally found a boundary. And Thor's power cannot protect the people he has only just saved from Asgard. For why the Loki who appears later is a different figure, see Loki's MCU chronology and the Sacred Timeline.
Result
Total Thanos victory. Hulk reaches Earth as a warning, not a winner.
Battle card 21
The Black Order Brings the Stone Hunt to Greenwich Village
New York City
Active Avenger: Iron Man.
Founding Avenger returned: Bruce Banner, unable to summon Hulk.
Independent heroes: Doctor Strange, Wong, Spider-Man.
Villains: Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian.
Ebony Maw goes after the Time Stone while Cull Obsidian engages Tony. Peter Parker leaves a school bus and joins without being asked. Wong removes Cull from the battlefield with a portal that closes on the attacker's arm. Maw captures Strange and lifts him toward the Q-Ship, and Tony and Peter follow.
The fight also shows what Civil War actually cost. Banner asks whether they should call Steve, and Tony hesitates at precisely the moment where contact should be automatic. Earth's defenders win several exchanges, and the Time Stone plus three critical heroes still leave the planet.
Result
Maw captures Strange. Tony and Peter board the ship, splitting Earth's response before the main battle starts.
Battle card 22
The Q-Ship Rescue Makes Spider-Man an Avenger
Ebony Maw's Q-Ship, en route to Titan
Active Avenger: Iron Man.
Recruit promoted in scene: Spider-Man.
Independent ally: Doctor Strange.
Villain: Ebony Maw.
Tony and Peter use Maw's confidence against him. Peter proposes a solution borrowed wholesale from Aliens, Tony breaches the hull, Maw is pulled into space, and Peter catches Strange before he follows. Tony then tells Peter, formally, that he is an Avenger.
The promotion carries warmth and unease in equal measure. Peter has earned it under pressure, and a teenager is now a full member of a team travelling toward a planet-sized threat with no route home. It is also the highest any screen Spider-Man has been promoted across fifty years of Spider-Man films. Tony chooses to take the fight to Titan rather than return to Earth, which widens the strategic split again.
Result
Ebony Maw dies and Strange is rescued. The heroes choose Titan as their battlefield.
Battle card 23
The Secret Avengers Return in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, Scotland
Targeted Avengers: Vision and Wanda.
Fugitive Avengers: Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon.
Villains: Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight.
Objective: protect Vision and the Mind Stone.
Corvus impales Vision with a weapon that disrupts his phasing, stripping away the ability that would normally end an ambush like this in seconds. Wanda holds the line while Proxima presses. Steve, Natasha and Sam arrive out of hiding and force the Black Order to withdraw.
The rescue reassembles part of the team through action, long before any political reconciliation happens. The wound also reshapes the campaign: the Mind Stone can no longer be protected by mobility or intangibility, so Vision has to be moved to Wakanda for a dangerous extraction.
Result
The Avengers save Vision. Corvus and Proxima survive, and the battle relocates to Wakanda.
Battle card 24
Knowhere Lets Gamora Believe She Has Won
The Collector's museum, Knowhere
Avengers present: none.
Allied heroes: Gamora, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis.
Villain: Thanos.
Weapon: the Reality Stone.
Gamora appears to kill Thanos, and then the scene dissolves as a Reality Stone construction. He takes her. Quill honours his promise to kill her rather than let Thanos have her, and the bubbles drifting out of his weapon confirm who has been setting the terms all along.
The engagement belongs in the Avengers record because it decides the Soul Stone and, through it, the outcome on Titan. Thanos wins by making his opponents act inside a reality he wrote. His version of power looks less and less like strength and more like control over the conditions in which choice happens.
Result
Thanos captures Gamora and proceeds to Vormir. The Guardians lose their best intelligence.
It also breaks the found family that the first Guardians film spent its whole running time assembling.
Battle card 25
Nidavellir: Thor Fights a Dead Star for a Weapon
The dwarven forge, Nidavellir
Founding Avenger: Thor.
Allies: Rocket, Groot and Eitri.
Opponent: a dying neutron star, and the consequences of Thanos already having been here.
Objective: forge a weapon capable of killing Thanos.
There is no enemy on Nidavellir because Thanos removed it long ago, killing the dwarves and maiming Eitri after forcing him to build the Gauntlet. The obstacle is physics. Thor holds the iris open and absorbs the full force of a reignited star to complete the mould, a load the University of Leicester's Journal of Physics Special Topics puts at roughly 8.8 x 10^24 joules, and Groot severs his own arm to supply the handle when the mechanism fails.
It is the only front in the film where the heroes get exactly what they came for. Stormbreaker is the one object in the saga that can beat a completed Gauntlet, and Thor arrives in Wakanda carrying it. That the film still ends the way it does is the point: the weapon was never the missing piece. Thor's road to it runs through his full MCU chronology.
Result
Complete success. The heroes acquire the means to win and lose anyway.
Battle card 26
Titan Comes Within Seconds of Ending the War
The ruins of Titan
Avengers: Iron Man and the newly inducted Spider-Man.
Allies: Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Nebula.
Villain: Thanos.
Objective: remove the Gauntlet.
Strange has looked at more than fourteen million futures and found exactly one win. The group attacks through a coordinated plan built around restraint rather than damage. Portals redirect movement, Peter binds limbs, Tony controls range, and Mantis suppresses Thanos's mind. The Gauntlet starts to come off.
Nebula realises Gamora is dead. Quill demands confirmation and hits him, Mantis loses her hold, and Thanos wakes up. Strange fights with layered spells, Tony empties every adaptive weapon in the Mark L, and Peter spends the whole battle catching falling teammates. Tony draws blood and is stabbed for it. Strange hands over the Time Stone to keep him alive, acting on knowledge nobody else in the fight has.
Why the plan fails
Blaming one punch misses the architecture. Thanos has already murdered the person anchoring Quill's judgment, and he did it specifically to buy a Stone. The heroes draw their courage from attachment and become vulnerable through the same channel. Thanos calls that weakness while treating love as property he is entitled to spend.
Result
Thanos wins, takes the Time Stone and leaves for Earth. Strange preserves Tony for the one future he saw.
Battle card 27
Wakanda Holds the Line While Shuri Races the Clock
Wakandan plains and the Mount Bashenga laboratory
Avengers and fugitives: Steve, Natasha, Sam, Rhodey, Bruce, Wanda, Vision.
Allied forces: T'Challa, Okoye, Shuri, M'Baku, Bucky, the Dora Milaje, the Jabari and the Wakandan army.
Late arrivals: Thor, Rocket and Groot.
Villains: Proxima, Corvus, Cull and the Outriders.
The defenders need time for Shuri to separate the Mind Stone from Vision without killing him. The Outriders begin working around the energy shield, forcing T'Challa to open a controlled section and take the fight to open ground. Bruce fights inside the Hulkbuster because Hulk refuses to come out. Wanda stays with Vision until the line starts to collapse.
Thor lands with Stormbreaker, Rocket and Groot and turns a desperate defence into a rout. The Black Order dies in single combats: Bruce launches Cull into the shield, Wanda drops Proxima into the path of a giant ground weapon, and a wounded Vision kills Corvus with Corvus's own glaive.
The defending force wins the conventional battle completely, and it cannot stop the one enemy the entire army existed only to delay.
Notable absence: Tony is on Titan. Steve and Tony never share a scene in this film, and the two primary Avengers commands spend it on different planets.
Result
The Outrider army and the remaining Black Order are destroyed. Thanos reaches the Mind Stone.
Battle card 28
Wanda Wins the Impossible Choice, Then Thanos Rewrites It
Wakandan forest, final confrontation
Avengers opposing Thanos: Steve, Bruce, Natasha, Sam, Rhodey, Wanda, Vision, Thor.
Allied resistance: T'Challa, Bucky, Okoye, Groot, Rocket.
Final opponent: Thanos with five Stones.
Objective: destroy or defend the Mind Stone.
Thanos moves through the heroes neutralising rather than killing. Steve briefly holds his hand still and Bruce charges him in the Hulkbuster, and none of it matters against a campaign that is already effectively finished. Wanda destroys the Mind Stone and kills Vision while holding Thanos back with her other hand. She makes the sacrifice the team spent the entire film postponing.
Thanos reverses it with the Time Stone, restores Vision and tears the Stone out of his head. Thor drives Stormbreaker into his chest, a blow powerful enough to beat the Gauntlet, and chooses a slow strike that allows recognition and revenge instead of a fatal one. Thanos closes his hand. That failure becomes the defining wound in Thor's MCU chronology.
The Avengers win individual contests all the way through Infinity War and lose the campaign. Their fronts never merge, their information stays fragmented, and every near-victory is undone by a decision shaped by love, grief or vengeance. The film does not treat those as moral defects. The failure is facing a unified plan as disconnected people.
Notable absences: Tony and Peter are stranded on Titan. Clint and Scott are under house arrest and never enter the campaign at all. The original six do not share a single scene.
Result
Absolute strategic victory for Thanos. The Snap is the clearest villain win in the MCU.
Thanos wins because the heroes inherit Civil War
Separating Tony and Steve costs more than any missing power set. Tony's improvisation and Steve's field coordination operate on different planets. Thor builds the weapon that can kill Thanos and lands without knowing the Titan plan existed. Wakanda defends Vision without knowing the Time Stone has already changed hands. Katja Rammer's structural breakdown of the film only resolves once you treat the Avengers as a single protagonistic force, which is exactly the thing they are not.
For the wider structure, see The Astromech's study of science-fiction films where the villain wins. Infinity War earns its ending because Thanos does not steal a victory in the last minute. He has been setting the order of the film since its opening scene.
Endgame (2023): History Becomes the Battlefield
Endgame opens with a revenge victory that changes nothing, spends five years living in the consequences, and then turns the MCU's own past into mission terrain. The final battle only works because of the grief, the failed recovery and the two sacrifices that cannot be undone.
Surviving original Avengers: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Natasha, Clint.
Operational network: Natasha, Steve, Rhodey, Rocket, Nebula, Okoye, Carol.
Final enemy: Thanos and an army displaced from 2014.
Battle card 29
The Avengers Kill Thanos and Discover Revenge Is Empty
The Garden, 2018
Avengers: Steve, Natasha, Bruce, Thor and Rhodey.
Independent allies: Carol, Rocket and Nebula.
Target: the injured 2018 Thanos.
Absent Avenger: Tony, physically wrecked after Titan.
Carol restrains Thanos while the team pins him down. Thor cuts off the Gauntlet arm and finds nothing in it. Thanos has already used the Stones to destroy the Stones. Thor beheads him anyway. Carol's role as the emergency power capable of both reaching Tony in deep space and holding Thanos still sits inside her longer absence from Earth, traced in Captain Marvel's MCU chronology.
The team wins more easily than at any earlier point in the saga, because Thanos has finished and barely resists. Killing the villain after the plan has already succeeded is punishment, not rescue, and it brings back nobody.
Result
Thanos dies. The Snap stands. The apparent route to restoration is gone.
Battle card 30
Natasha Finds Hawkeye Beneath the Ronin Hood
Tokyo, 2023
Former Avenger: Clint Barton as Ronin.
Avengers leader: Natasha Romanoff.
Physical opponent: Akihiko and his organisation.
Emotional objective: bring Clint back for the Time Heist.
Clint kills Akihiko after cutting through his crew, continuing a campaign against criminals who survived when his family did not. Natasha does not beat him in combat. She interrupts the identity he has built out of grief and offers him a possibility he is frightened to trust.
The confrontation restores an Avenger by recognising that punishment has become self-destruction. Natasha has spent five years holding the team together as a structure, and retrieving Clint is operational and personal at once. It also sets up Vormir, where each of them will argue that the other deserves the future more.
Result
Ronin's campaign ends. Hawkeye returns to the mission.
Battle card 31
New York 2012 Fights Back Against the Time Heist
Stark Tower, the surrounding streets and the Sanctum Sanctorum
2023 team: Steve, Tony, Bruce, Scott.
2012 counterparts: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Natasha, Hawkeye.
Independent guardian: the Ancient One.
Complication: a captured 2012 Loki.
Bruce goes to the Ancient One for the Time Stone. She separates his astral form from Hulk, then explains why removing a Stone endangers a branch reality. Tony and Scott try to lift the Tesseract in the aftermath of the Battle of New York, and 2012 Hulk smashes through a stairwell and knocks the case loose. Loki takes it and vanishes, creating the branch that leads into the Loki series, still the most structurally important thing Marvel made in Phase Four.
Steve secures the sceptre by exploiting a Hydra secret he will not learn for another two years, then runs into his own younger self, who assumes he is Loki in disguise. The fight ends when the older Steve uses knowledge about Bucky to create an opening.
The team gains the Time and Mind Stones and loses its first shot at the Space Stone. Tony and Steve spend their remaining Pym Particles travelling to 1970 for the Tesseract and more particles, which also forces Tony to meet Howard as an anxious father rather than as the cold memory he has been carrying. The branching rules behind all of this are set out in The Astromech's Endgame time travel guide, and they hold together better than most screen time-travel plots do under the same pressure.
Result
Two Stones secured, one operation compromised, one new Loki branch created.
Battle card 32
Vormir Turns Friendship Into a Fight for the Right to Die
Vormir, 2014 branch
Avengers: Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Keeper: Red Skull.
Requirement: a soul for the Soul Stone.
Conflict type: hero against hero, each trying to be the one who dies.
Natasha and Clint each decide the other has to survive. Clint believes the Ronin years make his life the lesser one. Natasha believes his family gives him a future, and sees this mission as the completion of the family she built after the Red Room. They fight knowing that winning means dying.
Natasha pins him and jumps. He catches her, and she forces him to let go. The Soul Stone appears in Clint's hand. There is no villain to beat and no technological escape clause. The mission succeeds because she makes an irreversible choice.
Her absence from the final battle is causal rather than incidental. Every restored fighter who walks through a portal does so because she cannot. Her full path is traced in Black Widow's MCU chronology.
Result
Natasha dies. Clint has the Soul Stone. The restoration becomes possible.
Battle card 33
Two Nebulas Fight Over Which Future Gets to Exist
Morag in 2014 and the Avengers compound in 2023
Allied hero: 2023 Nebula.
Enemy counterpart: 2014 Nebula, still loyal to Thanos.
Defecting ally: 2014 Gamora.
Strategic villain: 2014 Thanos.
The two Nebulas share networked implants, which lets 2014 Thanos read the future Nebula's memories. His forces capture the 2023 version and send the earlier one through the Quantum Realm in her place, opening the route that brings Sanctuary II and an entire army into 2023.
During the compound battle, 2014 Gamora turns on Thanos after seeing the future her sister escaped. The two of them confront 2014 Nebula, and when she refuses to change, 2023 Nebula kills her earlier self and does not disappear. The branch model holds.
It is a compressed statement of both the film's time-travel rules and Nebula's arc. She cannot repair herself by editing her own past. She can decide which inherited loyalty gets to continue.
Result
2023 Nebula survives and 2014 Gamora defects. Their earlier counterpart dies.
Battle card 34
Thanos Answers the Restoration With Orbital Fire
New Avengers Facility, upstate New York, 2023
Avengers on site: Tony, Steve, Thor, Bruce, Clint and Rhodey.
Heist allies: Scott, Rocket and Nebula.
Villain: 2014 Thanos.
Enemy force: Sanctuary II and the 2014 invasion army.
Bruce uses the Nano Gauntlet to restore the vanished and destroys his right arm doing it. Before anyone can confirm it worked, Sanctuary II opens fire on the compound. The bombardment buries several heroes and separates Clint from the Gauntlet. Bruce holds collapsing debris off Rhodey and Rocket until Scott, who survived elsewhere in the wreckage, grows to Giant-Man size and pulls them out.
Clint then carries the Gauntlet through flooded tunnels full of Outriders. This is the first phase of the final battle and its objective is brutally simple: do not let Thanos touch the Stones. The building that represented a stable Avengers institution is rubble before the restored army even arrives.
Notable limitation: Hulk is present and badly injured by his own restorative snap. His reduced combat role is the price of bringing everyone else back.
Result
Thanos destroys the compound and controls the ground. The Avengers keep hold of the Gauntlet.
Battle card 35
The Original Trinity Faces a Thanos Who Has Never Met Them
The ruins of the Avengers compound
Active Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor.
Final opponent: 2014 Thanos, without Stones.
Weapons: the Mark LXXXV, Stormbreaker, Mjolnir and the vibranium shield.
Turning point: Steve lifts Mjolnir.
Three founders attack a younger Thanos who knows their future without having lived it. Thor fights with both Stormbreaker and Mjolnir. Tony channels Thor's lightning through his armour, running the same combinations the team has been refining since New York. Thanos overpowers all three anyway.
Then Steve picks up the hammer and drives Thanos back with a sequence built from lightning, shield and Mjolnir together. The payoff reaches back to the party in Age of Ultron, where the hammer shifted slightly under his hand. Worthiness gives him another weapon, not a guaranteed win. Thanos recovers, breaks the shield and calls down his whole army.
Steve stands alone and tightens the strap on a broken shield. It is the purest version of the character, because there is no reasonable expectation of survival left in the frame. Then Sam's voice comes over the comm.
Result
Thanos wins the three-on-one. Steve refuses to surrender and survives long enough for the portals.
Battle card 36 — Battle of Earth, phase one
Portals Answer the Isolation of Infinity War
Battle of Earth, the arrival
Core Avengers: Steve, Tony, Thor, Clint, Bruce.
Returning Avengers: Sam, Wanda and Peter.
Allied forces: T'Challa and the Wakandans, the sorcerers, the Asgardians, the Ravagers, the Guardians, and heroes from across the MCU.
Enemy force: 2014 Thanos, the Black Order, Chitauri, Outriders, Sakaarans and Leviathans.
Strange, Wong and the sorcerers open portals across the whole battlefield. T'Challa, Shuri and Okoye come through first. Sam, Bucky, Peter, the Guardians, Valkyrie, Wasp, Pepper Potts in the Rescue armour and armies from four corners of the franchise follow. Steve finally gives the order the series has spent eleven years building toward.
The arrival is Infinity War's structure run in reverse. Titan, Wakanda, Earth and the cosmic heroes share one field, one enemy and one instruction. Thanos still has the bigger conventional army. The Avengers have the better network, and every connection in it was earned in somebody else's film.
Notable absences: Natasha is dead because the Soul Stone required it. Vision is dead because the Mind Stone was torn out of him. The original Gamora died on Vormir, and the Gamora on this field is the 2014 version, with no shared history with the Guardians at all.
Result
The coalition prevents immediate defeat and turns the ruins into a contested battlefield.
Battle card 37 — Battle of Earth, phase two
The Gauntlet Relay Turns the Finale Into a Team Sport
Battle of Earth, the mobile objective
Primary carriers: Hawkeye, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel.
Protection: Wanda, Okoye, Valkyrie, Wasp, Rescue, Shuri, Gamora, Mantis and the wider coalition.
Battlefield support: Doctor Strange holding back the flood.
Enemy objective: take the Stones and reach the Quantum Tunnel.
Clint starts the relay through the rubble and hands off to T'Challa. Black Panther cuts through the enemy line until Thanos stops him. Peter takes over, switches on Instant Kill and travels above the battlefield on web lines. The gathered women clear a route toward the Quantum Tunnel, and Thanos's forces destroy it before the Gauntlet can be sent back.
Wanda then reaches Thanos and comes close enough to killing him that he orders Sanctuary II to fire on his own troops to break her off. The bombardment only stops when Captain Marvel arrives and destroys the ship. She takes the Gauntlet and drives for the ruined tunnel.
The sequence refuses the lone-hero model entirely. No carrier finishes the route. Progress is a chain of temporary protection, handovers and interventions, and the Stones move because dozens of people keep the mission alive a few seconds at a time.
Result
Sanctuary II is destroyed and the return plan fails. The Gauntlet stays on the battlefield.
Battle card 38 — Battle of Earth, phase three
One Future Ends With Tony Stark Closing His Hand
Battle of Earth, the final contest for the Stones
Decisive Avenger: Iron Man.
Key ally: Captain Marvel.
Guiding knowledge: Doctor Strange.
Final opponent: 2014 Thanos.
Carol holds the Gauntlet open until Thanos pulls the Power Stone and hits her with it. He gets the Gauntlet back, snaps, and finds nothing there. Tony's armour transferred the Stones during their last grapple.
Strange raises one finger, confirming this is the single path he saw. Tony snaps and erases Thanos, the Black Order and the entire invading army. The energy kills him.
His first Avengers climax involved carrying a weapon away from civilians and expecting to die. His last one requires him to be the weapon and know for certain that he will. Ultron was an attempt to outsource planetary protection to a machine. The final snap accepts a cost that cannot be delegated to anything.
Why Natasha still matters here: Tony wins the visible exchange. Natasha made the exchange possible by securing the Soul Stone. Endgame has two indispensable sacrifices, and only one of them happens in front of an assembled army.
Result
Complete Avengers strategic victory. Thanos and his army are erased. Tony Stark dies using the Stones.
Endgame wins by converting memory into coordination
The Time Heist does more than revisit famous scenes. Steve faces his former certainty. Tony meets his father before fatherhood. Thor learns that failure has not made him unworthy. Nebula sees the controlled thing she was and chooses the person she became instead.
The time travel follows a branching model rather than rewriting the heroes' own past, which is why 2023 Nebula can kill her 2014 counterpart and why a 2014 Thanos can die without erasing Infinity War. The mechanics are laid out in the Endgame time travel guide, and the Steve Rogers timeline problem takes on the questions his final trip leaves behind. The film's open rejection of the Back to the Future rulebook is also why it belongs with the science fiction that does not break its own rules.
Which Avengers Battle Matters Most?
Scale and consequence produce completely different rankings. The Battle of Earth fields the largest force. The Snap has the widest consequence. Siberia does the most damage with the fewest combatants in the room. Sokovia creates the political conditions that make the later defeat possible in the first place. Not everyone rates the finale, either: Film Obsessive argues that Endgame reduces the Stones to collectibles and squanders the theme Infinity War built.
Largest physical scale
The Battle of Earth, with armies and heroes gathered from across Earth and space.
Greatest civilian consequence
The Snap, which erases half of all life and destabilises the survivors for five years.
Greatest political consequence
Sokovia, sharpened by Lagos, because the destruction produces the Sokovia Accords.
Most complete team fracture
Siberia. The airport divides the roster; the bunker destroys the relationship holding it together.
Greatest sacrifice
Endgame needs Natasha's life for the Soul Stone and Tony's life to end the invasion.
Clearest villain victory
Thanos in Infinity War. He completes his declared goal and gets the closing image.
Most decisive Avenger
Tony in Endgame, though his snap rests on Bruce's restoration and Natasha's sacrifice.
Most consequential absence
Tony and Steve, separated across Infinity War. The missing relationship matters more than any missing power.
| Film | Defining battle | Opponent | Outcome | Lasting cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Avengers | Battle of New York | Loki and the Chitauri | Total win | Earth enters open cosmic history |
| Age of Ultron | Battle of Sokovia | Ultron and his drones | Win, public trust lost | The Sokovia Accords become possible |
| Civil War | Leipzig and Siberia | Each other, directed by Zemo | Zemo wins | The Avengers meet Thanos divided |
| Infinity War | Titan and Wakanda | Thanos and the Black Order | Thanos wins completely | The Snap removes half of all life |
| Endgame | Battle of Earth | 2014 Thanos and his army | Coalition wins | Tony and Natasha die; Steve retires |
How Avengers teamwork changes across the saga
New York is coordinated improvisation. Sokovia is expert teamwork undermined by a decision made outside the team. Civil War converts knowledge of each other into weapons. Infinity War contains brilliant local cooperation with no unified command anywhere above it. Endgame finally joins every surviving network under one objective.
The pattern explains why a stronger roster does not guarantee a better outcome. The Infinity War heroes hold far more total power than the 2012 six and they lose. The variable that actually decides these battles is whether information, trust and purpose travel between people. A team is an operating relationship, not a list of names.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest Avengers battle?
The Battle of Earth in Endgame, by a wide margin. It fields the Avengers, the Wakandan army, the Masters of the Mystic Arts, the Asgardians, the Ravagers, the Guardians and every restored hero in the franchise against Thanos's full 2014 invasion force. The Battle of New York is the most influential, but it is a fraction of the size. The full franchise map is in The Astromech's MCU archive.
Did the Avengers ever beat Thanos in a straight fight?
Not while he held Stones. Titan comes closest, with the Gauntlet halfway off his hand, and it fails. Thor lands a killing blow in Wakanda a second too late. The Garden execution succeeds only because Thanos has already finished and offers almost no resistance. The victory in Endgame comes from taking the Stones, not from out-fighting him.
Who actually won the airport battle in Civil War?
Zemo. Tony's side takes four prisoners and keeps its legal standing, and Steve's side gets the two people it needed onto a Quinjet to Siberia. Neither counts as a win, because Zemo's objective was never territory. He wanted the Avengers to injure each other badly enough that no later explanation could repair it, and Rhodey's fall achieves exactly that.
Why did the Avengers lose Infinity War?
Because they fought on four fronts with no shared command. Tony's group is on Titan, Steve's is in Wakanda, Thor is on Nidavellir and the Guardians are chasing Gamora. Each front comes close to stopping Thanos on its own. None of them knows what the others are doing, and the split originates in Civil War rather than in anything Thanos does.
Is Captain America: Civil War an Avengers film?
Formally it is a Captain America entry. Functionally it is the third Avengers film, since almost the whole roster appears and the fracture it creates directly determines the outcome of Infinity War. Any account of the team's battles that skips it cannot explain why the next film goes the way it does.
Why does Wanda destroy the Mind Stone if it kills Vision?
Because Vision asks her to, and because she is the only person present capable of it. The film spends its whole running time avoiding that choice, and she is the one who finally makes it. Thanos then reverses it with the Time Stone, which is the point: her sacrifice was correct and it was still not enough on its own.
Which Avengers battles does the team genuinely lose?
P.E.G.A.S.U.S., the Klaue salvage ship, the Siberian bunker in strategic terms, the Statesman, Titan, the final confrontation in Wakanda, and the opening bombardment of the compound in Endgame. Almost every one of them is a loss caused by division, deception or grief rather than by being physically outmatched.
Who is the most important Avenger across the Infinity Saga?
Tony Stark makes the final snap, and the two people without whom it never happens are Natasha Romanoff and Bruce Banner. Natasha holds the network together for five years and buys the Soul Stone with her life. Bruce is the only one who can survive using the Nano Gauntlet. The saga is fairly insistent that no single name is the answer.

After the Infinity Saga: what the next Avengers inherit
The films that follow do not start clean. Tony and Natasha are dead, Steve has retired, Vision is gone, and more than one group can now claim the Avengers name. The reformed Thunderbolts front a New Avengers roster of their own, and that team arrives carrying its own damage. Sam Wilson holds the shield. Nobody in either group was in the room for New York, Sokovia or Siberia, which is the whole difficulty: the coordination this archive tracks was built person by person, and most of those people are no longer available.
The enemy changes shape too. Loki wanted a throne, Ultron wanted forced evolution, Thanos wanted subtraction. Doctor Doom wants authorship, and that is the one argument the Avengers have never had a good answer to, because it arrives dressed as competence. The character history is set out in Doom from Fantastic Four #5 to Doomsday, the comics grounding in the ten defining Doom stories, and the endgame of it in the Secret Wars and Battleworld guide.
The battlefield also gets wider than a planet. First Steps opened the door with Galactus, Franklin Richards and a post-credits scene that puts Doom in the room, and the film itself is worth the time on its own terms. Mutants are walking in as well, which makes the Fox X-Men timeline required reading again, and Brand New Day has already started the handover.
The Avengers win when power becomes a relationship between people who trust each other enough to share the weight of it. They fail when protection turns into unilateral control, when grief becomes a private command structure, or when secrecy stops the team acting like one. New York creates the promise. Sokovia exposes the flaw. Civil War breaks the mechanism. Infinity War collects the debt. Endgame pays it with two lives.
