Weir does not ask readers to cheer this uncritically, and he does not ask them to condemn it either. He stages it and lets the discomfort sit. The mission’s architect is efficient, contemptuous of process, and almost entirely unsentimental, and the novel is honest about how much of the mission’s success depends on a willingness to override the checks that a functioning, unthreatened society would normally insist on. How Doctor Doom Became Sorcerer Supreme

The mystic companion to our coverage of Doom's technology and tyranny. Elsewhere on this site we have explored the engineer king: the armour, the time platform and the stolen cosmic power. This is the other half of the man, and it is the half that finally killed him.

Spoiler warning: this piece discusses the endings of Triumph and Torment from 1989, “Unthinkable” from 2003, Blood Hunt from 2024 and One World Under Doom from 2025 in full.

For sixty years the shorthand on Victor von Doom has been genius in a metal suit. It is the version the films reach for, the version the toys sell, and the version our own Doctor Doom Comic History: The 10 Defining Story Moments spends most of its word count on. On the evidence of the last two years of Marvel publishing, it is also the less dangerous half of him.

Doom did not argue his way into the highest tier of Marvel's mystic hierarchy. He did not get voted in, appointed or blessed. In 2024 he simply took the title of Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange during a hostage negotiation, and then he kept it. ]

What follows is how a boy who dug his mother's spellbooks out of the dirt ended up holding the highest office in Earth's magical order, and what he had to burn to keep it.

The inheritance he dug out of the ground

It is there in the first telling. In Fantastic Four Annual issue 2 from 1964, “The Origin of Doctor Doom” by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, young Victor unearths his mother's chest of mystical potions and books after Werner von Doom dies, then starts practising. By the time he reaches Latveria's tormentors, the comic describes him plainly as a master of science and sorcery. Both disciplines were there from the start. When he later reaches the Himalayas, the order of monks he finds teach him magic before forging his armour.

Two details often disappear from the brief version. His mother is unnamed in that issue. Cynthia von Doom arrives seven years later in Astonishing Tales issue 8 from 1971, by Gerry Conway, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer. That story also reveals that her soul is in Hell and explains why Victor keeps building machines that can punch holes in the netherworld.

Ed Brubaker's Books of Doom, published from 2005 to 2006, adds the detail that reframes everything: Victor tried magic first, believing it was the road to rescuing her, and it failed him. Science was the fallback.

The Doom verdict: magic is Doom's first language, his mother's estate and the first thing in his life that told him no.

Second place, and what it actually cost him

Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment, Marvel Graphic Novel issue 49 from 1989, was written by Roger Stern with art by Mike Mignola and Mark Badger. It remains the single most important Doom story that somehow misses far too many top ten lists.

The Aged Genghis, granted power by the Vishanti on the condition that he convene a tournament of Earth's greatest mystics, wakes for his one lucid day in a century and summons them. Strange wins. Doom places second, judged before every sorcerer who matters in a contest ordained by the Vishanti.

Second place earns Doom a boon from the victor. He uses it on the only thing he has ever truly wanted: get my mother out of Mephisto's realm. In the Hell that follows, Doom appears to betray Strange. He offers the bound Sorcerer Supreme to Mephisto, alongside his own soul, as the purchase price.

Then comes the turn that makes this a great comic. Cynthia refuses. When she learns what her son paid, she denounces him as a traitor and stays. Her soul ascends only after Mephisto loses his grip on her in the ensuing battle, and because rejecting a rescue built on another man's damnation earns her release. Doom wins the duel, wins the boon and outmanoeuvres the devil. His mother still goes free through her own moral choice.

The Doom verdict: he is formally the second greatest sorcerer on Earth. The story exists to tell him that the ranking cannot give him what he wants.

The price of real magic

“Unthinkable” from 2003, by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo, is where Doom starts treating sorcery as an accounting problem.

In Fantastic Four volume 3, issue 67, “Under Her Skin”, he tracks down Valeria, his Romani first love from the life before the mask. He arrives without armour or mask, gives her the wooden music box he carved for her as a boy, and asks her to come home. She says yes.

The locket he clasps around her neck is the trap. Her skin is stripped from her bones and reforged as his mystical armour. This is the price demanded by the Haazareth Three, who grant him the sorcery he might have possessed if he had never chosen science. “Farewell, my love. Dear, dear Valeria.”

He wears her for the rest of the arc. In issue 68 he strokes the armour while telling an infant that he named her after someone close to him.

That infant is Valeria Richards, whose birth Doom attended as a magical midwife in issue 54. He claimed the right to name her and used the opening to bind her as his familiar. Her first word is “Doom.” He traps Franklin in Hell, while torturing the rest of the Fantastic Four in Latveria. When Reed surrenders for the return of “a child”, Doom gives Valeria back. Victor never specified which child.

The defeat is the elegant part. Doom locks Reed in a library of mystical tomes so he can gloat, and a candle flame writes “Knowledge isn't everything.” In Fantastic Four issue 500, Strange's astral form emerges from a book and teaches Reed the one lesson for which he has no framework: stop solving it. The spell works when Reed admits that he cannot solve the problem.

Reed then goads Doom into declaring, within earshot of the Orb of Agamotto, that he intends to break his bargain. The Haazareth Three take him. The defeat arrives through the terms of Victor's own contract.

The Doom verdict: he finally treated magic as a contract and discovered that the fine print could drag him to Hell.

Respect, rivalry and the leash

The revealing detail is how differently Doom treats Strange and Reed. Reed is the wound, the rivalry Victor must keep winning forever. Strange is someone Doom simply rates. He accepts second place to Strange in 1989 without spending the next decade demanding rematches. He feels no need to prove himself the better sorcerer, only the more willing one.

That distinction defines the character. Strange is bound by an office, by the Vishanti and by rules older than he is. Doom looks at all of it and sees a permissions system.

The Doom verdict: Doctor Strange earns Doom's respect. The leash attached to Strange's office earns his contempt.

The title he took

Blood Hunt from 2024, by Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz, is where the leash comes off.

With Earth smothered in Darkforce and vampires ascendant, Doom offers Strange a solution and names his price: the title of Sorcerer Supreme. The transfer is supposed to be temporary. Strange, out of options, agrees.

Watch what Doom does next. He recruits Strange's own students from Strange Academy and wins them by presenting the less genocidal option. His plan avoids the Montesi Formula and the extermination of an entire species.

The spell works. The Darkforce lifts. In Blood Hunt issue 5, Strange asks Doom to honour his promise. Doom refuses and makes Strange disappear. The sunlight he restores no longer burns vampires, either. Nobody seems to send Victor the invoice for that detail.

Then Doom goes quiet for six months and returns to take the planet.

One World Under Doom, issues 1 to 9, was published from February to November 2025 by Ryan North and R.B. Silva. It is the argument this whole essay has been building toward. Emperor Doom outlaws war, opens every border, and gives the world free healthcare and education. He cures the Thing, succeeding where Reed spent decades failing.

Wanda, Madelyne Pryor and Mordo enter the minds of world leaders expecting mind control and find none. The leaders follow Doom because his system appears to be working. North has described the book as a story about the dangerous fantasy of the perfect ruler. Doom's answer is obvious: yes, it is fascism, and he considers it acceptable when he is the fascist.

Issue 6 brings the bill. Behind the Latverian dome sits a lattice of blood magic, chaos magic and time magic, powered by a million human souls whose lifetimes are being harvested. Every miracle was charged to somebody. When the office of Sorcerer Supreme finally brings an unavoidable duty, the arrival of the Scions of Cyttorak, Doom hands the task to Spider Man.

The story ends the only way this version of Doom could. In issue 8 he fixes the timeline into place and detonates his armour. The shrapnel kills Valeria Richards in front of him. In issue 9 he carries her body to the Vishanti, who refuse him, and then to the Living Tribunal. The Tribunal agrees to restore her in exchange for Victor's life. Doom asks Mister Fantastic to look after the world, then disintegrates.

The Doom verdict: he proved that he could hold the highest office in magic. He never accepted that the office also held him.

So where does Doom rank?

The internet keeps asking whether Doom belongs among Marvel's highest tier sorcerers. A coup and a corpse settled the practical version of that question. He held the chair, kept it longer than many expected, and left it dead.

He is no longer Sorcerer Supreme. The cloak and the Eye of Agamotto called out at the moment of his fall, and Wanda Maximoff answered them. Her Sorcerer Supreme series by Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang launched in December 2025. The Vishanti refused to validate her claim and anointed Agatha Harkness instead. There is a quiet joke at Doom's expense here. The Vishanti never sanctioned him either, and he never cared enough to ask.

Two footnotes count against Wanda. Avengers: The Children's Crusade, published from 2010 to 2012, reveals that Doom and Wanda's joint attempt to channel the Life Force produced the power behind House of M. The story ends with that entity entering Doom's body and giving him her abilities. In Darkhold from 2021, Doom tries to seize the Book of the Damned from her. Across fifteen years he reaches repeatedly for chaos magic that belongs to someone else. The final attempt takes the world with it.

And he is back. Doom returned in Captain America issue 12 from June 2026, by Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti, stripped of title and sanction. That is roughly where he started.

The Doom verdict: Doom is Marvel's most dangerous sorcerer because he is the one person in the hierarchy who has never believed that the hierarchy is real.

The History of Doctor Doom vs. the Fantastic Four

No other Marvel villain is this hard to surgically remove from one specific family. Take Doctor Octopus out of Spider-Man's life and you still have a functioning hero. Take the Fantastic Four out of Victor von Doom's and there is almost nothing left standing: no scar, no crown, no rivalry, no reason to build the mask in the first place. Sixty-three years and eleven landmark comics deep — The Astromech's full reading order already walked that history issue by issue — the more interesting question isn't what happened between Doom and the Fantastic Four. It's what he actually is to each of them, because it is never the same answer twice.

To Reed Richards, he is an unhealed wound wearing a crown. To Sue Storm, he is a kidnapper who has never once managed to fool her. To Ben Grimm, he is barely worth the effort of real hatred. To Johnny Storm, he is a threat that has, at least once, made surprisingly practical use of him. And to two children who were never supposed to matter to him at all, he is something closer to an actual uncle. This is that family history, member by member — plus the fandom's favourite receipts, and what it all means for a Doctor Doom now walking onto a film set instead of a drawing board.

Reed Richards: The Rivalry That Built Him

Every account of Victor von Doom returns to the same afternoon. At university, a classmate named Reed Richards finds the flaw in Victor's calculations for a machine built to reach the realm of the dead. Victor ignores the correction. The machine explodes, the scar it leaves sends him to Tibet, and the armour that comes back is as much a monument to that single afternoon as it is a weapon. Everything after is variation: Doom steals the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic in Fantastic Four #57-60 and loses it because Reed spots the one condition his pride overlooked; Books of Doom lets Victor narrate his own origin as though history itself owes him the final cut, except Reed's mere existence keeps disrupting the story Doom wants to tell; Unthinkable ends with Reed carrying a permanent scar of his own, finally matched to Victor's. By Secret Wars (2015), Doom has taken everything Reed ever had — his wife, his children, his place in history — and still cannot build a version of himself that doesn't eventually confess, out loud, that Reed would have done it better.

The Doom verdict: Victor doesn't want Reed dead. He wants Reed's verdict overturned — and sixty years of comics keep declining to overturn it.

Sue Storm: The Queen He Never Earned

Sue is the first person Doom ever uses as leverage — he kidnaps her in Fantastic Four #5 before the team has even learned to trust one another — and the pattern barely changes for decades. What does change is how quickly she reads him. Across the archive, The Astromech's own account of the character notes that Sue is "frequently the person who sees through Doom's theatre fastest," and the two Secret Wars only sharpen the point. On the 2015 Battleworld, Doom makes her his queen outright — Sue Storm Richards becomes Sue Storm von Doom in every way except consent — with Franklin and Valeria raised as their children and Reed edited out of the family's memory entirely. It is the single clearest example in the entire mythology of Victor mistaking appropriation for intimacy: he can rewrite an empire's history, install himself at the head of her family, and still never once ask her.

The Doom verdict: Victor can seize a throne, a planet, even a family. He has never once earned a person's genuine loyalty by asking rather than arranging.

Ben Grimm: The Rival Who Never Wanted the Rivalry

Ben gets the least personal treatment from Doom and, in a strange way, the most honest. Their first encounter in Fantastic Four #5 briefly mistakes him for Blackbeard — a joke at Ben's expense that sets the tone for decades of Victor treating him as muscle rather than a mind worth engaging. That dismissal is exactly what makes Ben's later arcs land. On the original 1984 Battleworld, freed from the usual rules of his own body, Ben discovers he can change between human and Thing at will — and chooses, for a while, to stay behind rather than go home. On the 2015 Battleworld, Doom hands him one of the regime's most thankless jobs, manning the Shield at the edge of the civilised world, and Ben abandons that post the moment it matters, helping topple the throne rather than guard its border. By Infamous Iron Man, Ben has become Doom's most persistent real-world sceptic — investigating him for S.H.I.E.L.D., refusing to let a few heroic acts erase a lifetime of history. Victor never respects Ben the way he begrudgingly respects Reed. Ben has never needed that respect to keep showing up.

The Doom verdict: Victor mistakes Ben Grimm for the least dangerous member of the family. Ben is the one who keeps outlasting him.

Johnny Storm: Fuel for Somebody Else's Fire

Of the four, Johnny has the thinnest personal history with Doom — mostly a convenient target, rarely a rival worth Victor's full attention. Which is what makes Secret Wars (2015) the strangest chapter in this entire family history. On Doom's patchwork Battleworld, Johnny Storm does not merely serve the regime. He is the regime's sun, literally burning in the sky to give a fabricated civilisation its daylight. It remains one of the most unsettling single images Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić produced across the whole event, precisely because it happens to the family member Doom has always taken least seriously. Victor converts the person he thinks matters least into something his entire fake world cannot survive without — and never seems to notice the irony.

The Doom verdict: Victor will turn anyone into infrastructure if the throne needs it — even, maybe especially, the one relative he never bothered to fear.

Franklin and Valeria: The Children Doom Actually Listens To

The one relationship in this entire history that isn't built on rivalry, kidnapping or conquest belongs to Reed and Sue's own children. In FF #1-5, "Tomorrow" (2011), it is Valeria Richards — a child — who recruits a mentally damaged Doom into the Future Foundation, offering to restore his genius in exchange for his help against the Council of Reeds. He accepts, and something rare happens: Doom contributes to a shared project rather than attacking one. Valeria is one of the only people alive who can negotiate with Victor von Doom directly and be taken seriously for it. That unusual regard curdles into something far darker on the 2015 Battleworld, where Doom raises both Franklin and Valeria as his own — a found family built on erasure rather than earned trust. And it is precisely this thread that The Astromech's breakdown of how The Fantastic Four: First Steps sets up Avengers: Doomsday picks back up on screen: five years after Franklin is born wielding reality itself, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doom is shown leaning silently over the boy's bed. With Molecule Man nowhere in this timeline, the implication is hard to miss — Doom may already be auditioning his next battery, and his next child.

The Doom verdict: Victor genuinely listens to exactly two people in the entire Richards family. Both of them are still young enough to believe he might actually change.

Key Fandom Moments: The Relationship in Its Own Shorthand

Longtime readers have their own private canon of Doom-and-FF beats that never quite make the "defining issues" lists but come up in every fan conversation anyway. The Doombot twist tops most of them: Victor's habit of fielding robot decoys is so constant that no on-panel defeat of Doom is ever fully trusted until several issues later — "it was just a Doombot" has become one of the longest-running punchlines in the genre. Right behind it is Latveria's diplomatic immunity, a recurring plot device in which the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and even the United Nations discover that a sitting head of state cannot simply be arrested — Marvel's sharpest running joke about how sovereignty can launder a supervillain. Fans also regularly point to how Reed-exclusive Doom's respect really is: his contempt for Ben reads as almost comic, his attention to Johnny is barely more than an afterthought, which is exactly why Sue "seeing through his theatre fastest" and Valeria earning his genuine trust land as such notable exceptions. Older readers still swap two more particular anecdotes — Doom's supposed refusal to ever cheat at a card table or chessboard, a matter of twisted personal honour, and a much-repeated Christmas Eve truce shared with Reed — though both have become fan lore repeated more often than precisely sourced, worth treating as beloved shorthand for Victor's contradictions rather than a single, citable issue.

Strip away the crowns, the mysticism and the borrowed Iron Man armour, and every era of Doctor Doom is still arguing with the same four people and their two children. Robert Downey Jr.'s casting isn't a swerve. For sixty-three years he has existed entirely on the page: a folded steel silhouette drawn by Jack Kirby's pencil, refined by a dozen writers who each believed they had finally found the real man under the mask. That era just ended. Robert Downey Jr. put the armour on, the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps confirmed it over a sleeping Franklin Richards, and Avengers: Doomsday now carries the single heaviest piece of casting news in MCU history into cinemas on 18 December 2026. Defining moments

Doom studies a god's loneliness purely in order to weaponise it.
He steals the Power Cosmic with a machine, proving that even gods are engineering problems to Victor von Doom.
Reed wins with analysis, not a bigger punch — the rivalry's defining shape from this point on.

Trivia: by 1966 the working relationship between Lee and Kirby — the two men handing Doom this kind of cosmic scale for the first time — was already famously fraying; more than one historian has noted how easily that tension reads into a villain who cannot stand playing second to anyone.

On screen: a villain stealing a god's own power to declare himself superior is close to exactly the shape Avengers: Doomsday's marketing has been teasing — six decades later, with a considerably bigger budget.

He defeats the Beyonder outright and briefly rules as an actual god, undone only by his own fear that the resurrected heroes, and a Captain America who simply will not stay down, might still take it all back.

Defining moments

Doom refuses the Beyonder's contest and targets its author instead.
Titania and Volcana are created as subjects, not allies — Doom rehearsing the Beyonder's own trick on a smaller scale.
His fear of losing stolen power becomes the exact flaw that ends his godhood.

Trivia: the series was commissioned to support a Mattel toy line, and its huge cast and neutral-planet setting were shaped directly by that licensing brief; years later, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars retconned Wade Wilson into this exact event and then erased everyone's memory of him, so any completist reread of Battleworld I now carries a joke stapled to it.

On screen: this toy-shelf-friendly, everyone-in-one-arena template is close to the literal structure Avengers: Doomsday is built on, right down to a cast pulled from realities that were never supposed to touch.

The Doom verdict: place Doom inside another god's game and he will not play it — he will audit it, find the exploit, and steal the house.

In Hell, Doom appears to betray Strange, offering him to Mephisto in exchange for Cynthia — but the betrayal is calculated. Watching her son sacrifice an innocent man is what finally lets Cynthia reject the hatred binding her, freeing her soul on her own moral terms. Doom keeps his word and frees Strange too, then privately mourns a mother whose forgiveness he could only earn by letting her condemn him.

Defining moments

Doom requests help, not a crown — the oldest, least armoured motive he has.
His apparent betrayal of Strange is a self-wounding plan, not genuine treachery.
Cynthia's salvation depends on a freely chosen moral act, the very category of choice her son's politics is built to deny everyone else.

Trivia: Mike Mignola's Gothic, iconography-heavy pencils here landed just a few years before he left mainstream superhero art to create Hellboy — plenty of readers now recognise this graphic novel as an early sketch of that signature style.

On screen: Marvel Studios has shown no sign yet of touching Mephisto or Cynthia's soul, which leaves this entire, definitive piece of Doom's mythology untouched and available for a future film to spend.

The Doom verdict: Victor can engineer another person's salvation while accepting that he may remain unforgiven himself.

Reed, forced to admit that genius in one discipline is not mastery of another, studies under Doctor Strange and finally drives Victor into Hell, who retaliates on the way down by scarring Reed's face for good.

The series never resolves cleanly — sincere change and entrenched authoritarian habits are left to coexist, on purpose.

Victor adopts an Iron Man identity immediately after Reed heals his face in Secret Wars.

The premise is worse than a war precisely because it barely looks like one: crime drops, conflicts stop, and the Fantastic Four, and the wider hero community, are left asking the one question sixty-plus years of comics have been building toward. If a tyrant's rule genuinely works on its own terms, is refusing to kneel still heroism, or just habit?

Defining moments

Doom becomes head of state everywhere on Earth simultaneously, with no second Battleworld required.
His rule is depicted producing real, measurable benefits — the "only I can save humanity" thesis stated in its purest, least deniable form.
The Fantastic Four are forced to argue against a version of Doom that the results do not obviously support opposing.

Trivia: this is effectively the story Doom's wider mythology has been building toward since Emperor Doom put humanity under the Purple Man's control decades earlier — except this time nobody is being mind-controlled, which is precisely what makes it worse. Every Marvel villain wants something. Only one of them has ever actually been handed it, ruled with it, and then quietly admitted out loud that it wasn't enough. Victor von Doom is Marvel's most honest tyrant, because he never pretends the cruelty is incidental.

Across sixty years of comics and two entire planets rebuilt in his image, the story keeps testing the same claim: that if you gave Victor von Doom reality itself, he would run it better than the man who beat him to a diploma.

Twice, Marvel has let him try.

Twice, the failure has been more interesting than the victory - and the aftershocks of both attempts are still setting up the next five years of Marvel's cinema.

The Man Behind the Mask

Every empire needs an origin story, and Doom's is a Gothic one. Born into a persecuted Romani camp in the country he will one day rule, Victor loses his mother, Cynthia, while still a child, inheriting nothing from her but books of witchcraft, and loses his father, Werner, a healer killed shielding his son once a hostile regime turns on them both.

At university, Reed Richards spots the flaw in Victor's machine for reaching the realm of the dead; Victor ignores the correction, the device explodes, and the scar it leaves behind sends him to Tibet, where monks forge the iron mask he will never again remove by choice. He returns home, deposes Latveria's ruler, and builds a monarchy on the one lesson the accident taught him: that being right and being humiliated are, for Victor von Doom, the same event.

Everything after that is variation on a theme. In 1984, the Beyonder drags heroes and villains to a patchwork planet called Battleworld and offers the victors their heart's desire in exchange for destroying their enemies. Everyone else on the board plays the game as advertised. Doom alone recognises the offer as an insult - a reward still leaves the giver above the recipient, and Doom cannot tolerate that hierarchy.

So he restores Ultron, builds Titania and Volcana out of two ordinary women, and turns Klaw's living sound body into a siphon capable of channelling stolen cosmic power. When Galactus feeds on his own worldship, Doom takes the overflow, defeats the Beyonder outright, and rules Battleworld as an actual god.

It lasts exactly as long as his fear of losing it allows. Absolute power makes Victor's private doubts consequential, and his subconscious terror that the heroes might return is what quietly helps bring them back, alongside the healer Zsaji, who burns out her own life restoring them. Captain America simply will not stay dead, will not kneel, and will not stop returning — and a man who can rewrite matter cannot rewrite that one refusal.

The Beyonder reclaims his stolen power, and everyone goes home carrying consequences: Spider-Man in a new black costume that will eventually become Venom, Titania and Volcana newly loose in continuity, Ben Grimm choosing, for the first time, whether to be the Thing at all.

The Doom verdict: place Victor von Doom inside another god's game and he will not play it — he will audit it, find the exploit, and steal the house.

Battleworld II: The Civilisation He Authored

Thirty-one years later, Jonathan Hickman simply hands him the win. Reed does not build a new empire on the old one. The Throne Waiting in Latveria's Future

Which is why the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands like a verdict rather than a tease. Five years after Franklin Richards is born wielding reality itself back into his mother's dead body, a green cloak and a riveted iron mask lean silently over his bed. The Astromech's breakdown of how First Steps sets up Avengers: Doomsday makes the arithmetic explicit: with Molecule Man nowhere in this timeline, Franklin is simply the next battery, and Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom has already chosen his Battleworld before the Multiverse has finished dying.

The Avengers films were never going to end anywhere else. They are, as The Astromech's chronology of the Avengers saga puts it, the load-bearing walls of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe — and every wall Doom has ever built exists to hold up a throne. Avengers: Doomsday arrives on 18 December 2026 to test that claim at last; Avengers: Secret Wars closes it a year later, on 17 December 2027. The comics have already shown their working twice over. Give Victor von Doom enough power to remake reality, and reality will spend years quietly, gorgeously, waiting to find out if this is finally the time he deserves it.

Strip away the armour and the two Battleworlds tell one continuous story: a boy who could not survive being wrong, twice given the tools to make wrongness impossible, and twice discovering that the one flaw no amount of cosmic power can fix is his own need to be the exception. That is the case for Victor von Doom — not that he is right, but that he is the only character in the Marvel Universe honest enough to stake everything on being right, in public, on camera, for sixty years running. There is only Doom. The only remaining question, on Battleworld or in a theatre in December 2026, is how long the rest of the universe gets to keep disagreeing with him.
