Marvel costumes get read as moral shorthand. They are nothing of the kind. They are claims — entered the moment the mask goes on, and verified only by what the wearer does afterwards.

They gave Steve Rogers a flag to wear and told the world it meant something.
They gave John Walker the same flag, the same shield, the same colors, and the same official blessing, and the world found out very quickly that it meant nothing at all.
They gave Erik Killmonger a suit built from the identical vibranium as the one worn by the king he came to kill, and the only difference anybody could see was that his was gold.
This is the thing nobody says out loud about superhero costumes. We are told they exist to help us tell the good ones from the bad ones. Bright primaries and clean lines for the hero. Darkness, sharp edges, exposed machinery and bodily distortion for the villain. Two seconds on a newsstand, one glance, verdict delivered.
And it works. That is the uncomfortable part. It works well enough that Marvel has spent sixty-five years building stories designed specifically to punish anyone who trusts it.
Here is the argument.
In Marvel, the costume is a moral claim. It is a public statement about what its wearer intends to represent. It is not, and has never been, evidence that the claim is true. The claim gets entered the moment somebody pulls the mask down. Verification happens afterwards, in what that person does while nobody is checking.
Which produces the only distinction in this entire universe that actually holds up. It has nothing to do with color.
The hero treats the costume as an obligation that has to be discharged again every single day.
The villain treats the costume, the title, the armor or the throne as the justification itself. Proof that no further argument is required.
Everything below is that one idea, tested against the material.
1. Marvel built a visual language, then spent sixty years breaking it
Start by conceding the point properly, because an argument with no opponent is worthless.
The word persona comes from the Latin for a theatrical mask. A carved face held up by a Roman actor so the man in the back row could tell instantly whether he was watching a tyrant or a fool. Costume as instant legibility is not a comic book invention. It is a technology that predates comics by two thousand years.
Superhero design inherits two more traditions on top of that. Heraldry, where a knight in a melee was completely unrecognizable as a man and completely legible as a coat of arms. And liturgical vestment, where cloth confers an authority the wearer did not personally generate and could not personally revoke.
All three do the same job. They make identity readable at speed, and they make the reading feel like knowledge.
Marvel industrialized it.
Look at what actually happened in the early years, because these were decisions, not accidents. Iron Man debuts in Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963) as a grey iron cylinder — genuinely frightening, genuinely wrong — and gets revised almost immediately. Gold in #40. The red-and-gold everybody knows in #48 (December 1963). Three iterations in nine months, because a hero has to look like a hero and a walking furnace does not.
Thor arrives in Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962) in a red cape and winged helm, borrowing his legibility wholesale from Wagnerian opera and Victorian mythology painting. Doctor Strange, in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963), arrives already dressed as an authority — a costume that ranks him inside a hierarchy the reader has not been shown a single rule of. The regalia proper is retrofitted over the following year: the Amulet of Agamotto in Strange Tales #115 (December 1963), the Cloak of Levitation in #127 (December 1964), and it was blue before it was red. The claim came first. The objects that justified it were added later, which is the whole pattern in miniature.
Steve Ditko went the other direction entirely with Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962). Full-face mask. No exposed skin anywhere. Webbing that reads as circuitry. Enormous blank white eyes. It is an unnerving design, and it works precisely because it is unnerving as well as heroic.
Jack Kirby had already done the loudest possible version twenty-one years earlier. Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941), Joe Simon writing, Kirby drawing a man dressed as a flag punching Adolf Hitler in the face. It reportedly sold close to a million copies. The shield was triangular on that cover and became a circle from issue #2 onward, apparently because the original looked too much like the one carried by MLJ Comics’ character The Shield. Even the most sacred object in the company changed shape inside sixty days for trademark reasons.
The villain side of the grammar is just as systematic. Doctor Doom, in Fantastic Four #5 (July 1962), is armor, hood, and a face nobody sees. The Green Goblin is asymmetry and a rictus grin. Ultron is exposed circuitry and a mouth locked open. The Red Skull is the whole system taken to its logical end: a villain whose face is the mask, and whose unmasking reveals not a vulnerable human being but something considerably worse than the disguise.
Then there is the exception that proves the system exists. The Fantastic Four debut in Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961) in street clothes. Kirby only puts them in matching blue uniforms in issue #3. And they never, ever wear masks.
That single choice generates decades of story. Uniform without concealment does not produce mystery. It produces celebrity. The FF get sued, taxed, photographed, evicted and interviewed, because they are a public family rather than a secret society, and their clothing said so from the beginning.
Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross understood this whole apparatus well enough to build a comic out of nothing but the apparatus. Marvels (1994) is narrated by Phil Sheldon, a news photographer. Sheldon does not know any of these people. He knows their outfits. He makes confident moral judgments on that basis, and he is wrong about roughly half of them.
Marvels is the reader’s own habit, held up as evidence.
Which makes it the perfect thing to weaponize.
2. What is the mask actually for?
A mask does two contradictory things at once, and Marvel has never resolved the contradiction, because the contradiction is the entire point.
The first job is protecting other people. Peter Parker’s mask exists because May Parker, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy and Ned Leeds are all physically reachable by anybody who learns his name.
That is not an abstract risk. Amazing Spider-Man #121 (1973), written by Gerry Conway and drawn by Gil Kane, throws Gwen Stacy off a New York bridge — the dialogue says George Washington, Gil Kane drew the Brooklyn, and comics fandom has been arguing about it for fifty years — specifically to establish that the people standing near a masked man are the softest targets in the building. Peter’s willingness to lie to everybody he loves is framed, exhaustingly and across decades, as a cost he absorbs on their behalf.
The second job is permission.
Matt Murdock is a defense attorney who has sworn an oath to a legal system. Daredevil is a man who beats confessions out of people in the dark. The costume is not incidental to that split. It is the mechanism that makes the split survivable.
Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Born Again (Daredevil #227–233, 1986) strips Matt of his license, his apartment, his money and his name, and the genuine horror of the arc is that the man is more dangerous without the structure than with it. Wilson Fisk’s famous formulation — that he has shown the world a man without hope is a man without fear — is a statement about what happens when the costume stops functioning as a container.
The cleanest illustration of the mask as permission rather than protection. Matt Murdock has sworn an oath to a legal system; the man in the horns does the things the oath forbids. Born Again puts the two in the same room and refuses to let either win.
Marvel’s most literal treatment of this is Moon Knight, introduced as a hired antagonist in Werewolf by Night #32 (August 1975) by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, then progressively rebuilt into an argument about identity itself. Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Jake Lockley. These are not covers for one man. They are the man, plural.
Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey’s Moon Knight #1 (2014) adds Mr. Knight, a bone-white bespoke suit worn openly in daylight, and it is a radical costume choice because it announces that concealment was never the purpose. Jeremy Slater’s 2022 Disney+ series casts Oscar Isaac to play the fracture rather than the character and reaches the same conclusion.
Moon Knight wears white while doing brutal things. The color is not exactly a lie. It is a claim about being seen, made by a man who cannot reliably report what he has done.
And then there is the mask as a place to put shame.
Wade Wilson wears red partly as a joke about blood and partly because he will not show his skin. Deadpool arrives in New Mutants #98 (February 1991) by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, and the mask is doing concealment work that has nothing to do with tactical advantage.
Doctor Doom is the sharper version. Fantastic Four Annual #2 (1964) establishes that the scar underneath the mask is minor. Trivial. The vanity becomes the characterization, and the detail that finishes it is that Doom pressed the still-glowing metal onto his own face rather than wait for it to cool.
The mask is not hiding an injury. It is hiding the fact that he could not bear to have one.
So the test is never whether a character wears a mask. The test is what the mask is for.
Peter Parker’s mask absorbs risk on behalf of other people. John Walker’s, as we are about to see, absorbs consequence on behalf of himself.
Same object. Opposite ethics.
3. The villain is the hero with one thing removed
Marvel’s single most repeated structural move is to hand the antagonist a version of the protagonist’s own costume, powers or origin. It converts external conflict into visible internal division. The villain stops being an opposite and becomes the hero with exactly one restraint deleted.
Iron Man and Iron Monger
Obadiah Stane arrives in Denny O’Neil’s Iron Man #163 (October 1982) as a corporate raider whose method is psychological. He does not fight Tony Stark. He attacks Tony’s alcoholism — three years after David Michelinie, Bob Layton and John Romita Jr. had put Tony on the floor in “Demon in a Bottle,” which runs Iron Man #120–128 and climaxes in #128 (November 1979) with one of the most reprinted covers Marvel ever published.
Stane’s Iron Monger armor turns up in Iron Man #200 (November 1985). Bigger, cruder, derived wholesale from stolen Stark designs.
Jon Favreau’s Iron Man (2008) compresses all of it into one film. Jeff Bridges builds his suit from Tony’s own schematics and cannot make the arc reactor work, because he can copy the engineering and not the reason for it. The visual joke is that Iron Monger is Iron Man scaled up and hollowed out.
Black Panther and Killmonger
Erik Killmonger — N’Jadaka — enters in Jungle Action #6 (September 1973), the opening chapter of Don McGregor’s Panther’s Rage in Jungle Action. Thirteen issues, #6 through #18, art by Rich Buckler and Billy Graham, and widely cited as the first novel-length arc Marvel ever committed to.
Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (2018) makes the mirroring total.
Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Stevens is Wakandan royalty raised in Oakland. Ruth E. Carter — who won the Academy Award for Costume Design for the film at the 91st ceremony in 2019, the first African American of any gender to win in that category, and won it again for Wakanda Forever in 2023 — dresses him in the Golden Jaguar suit. Same vibranium. Same silhouette. Gold instead of black.
His keloid scars, one raised mark per kill, are a costume he wrote onto himself. A ledger of conduct worn on the skin, which is the exact opposite of what a costume normally does.
The film’s argument is not that Killmonger is wrong about the diagnosis. It is that he has decided the suit’s authority licenses the cure.
Captain America and the Winter Soldier
Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s Captain America volume 5 (2005) resurrects Bucky Barnes as a Soviet asset, and the design does the thematic labor. Same shoulder-heavy build. Same era. Metal arm, mask covering only the eyes, long hair.
In Anthony and Joe Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Sebastian Stan’s mask gets knocked off mid-fight and the film’s engine reverses in a single frame. The villain’s face is the hero’s oldest friend.
That same film supplies a deeper mirror that most people file under plot twist rather than costume analysis. HYDRA wore S.H.I.E.L.D. uniforms for seventy years. And Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce establishes, without ever putting on anything remotely super, that the most effective costume in the entire MCU is a good suit and a security clearance.
Spider-Man and Venom
The black costume debuts in Amazing Spider-Man #252 (May 1984), pencilled by Ron Frenz over Brett Breeding finishes, with the in-story origin arriving in Secret Wars #8. The design began life as a fan submission from Randy Schueller, which Marvel bought for $220. Mike Zeck produced the version that got approved, and Rick Leonardi drew the turnaround model sheet every other artist then worked from.
Eddie Brock and Venom arrive properly in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988), David Michelinie writing, Todd McFarlane drawing.
Venom is Spider-Man’s silhouette with the restraint stripped out. Same web pattern, same eyes, plus teeth. He is what the costume looks like when it stops being worn and starts wearing.
Vision and Ultron
Ultron appears hooded as the Crimson Cowl in Avengers #54 and unmasked in #55 (1968), courtesy of Roy Thomas and John Buscema. A machine built by Hank Pym that immediately builds its own son.
Vision follows in Avengers #57 (October 1968), and Thomas gives him the caption “even an android can cry” in #58.
Same maker. Same materials. Opposite conclusions from identical premises.
Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) reassigns the parenthood to Tony Stark, gives James Spader’s Ultron Tony’s exact register of sardonic self-justification, and then has Paul Bettany’s Vision — wearing a cape, the most old-fashioned heroic garment available — reach the other verdict about whether life is worth keeping.
Thor and Loki
Journey into Mystery #85 (October 1962) establishes horns against winged helm, gold against green, hammer against knife.
Kenneth Branagh’s Thor (2011) and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok (2017) keep the visual pairing intact while steadily dismantling the moral one, until Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has arguably logged more genuine sacrifice than his brother. Al Ewing and Lee Garbett’s Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) says the theme out loud: Loki is the God of Stories, which is to say the god of self-presentation, which is to say the one character in the building qualified to explain that a costume is a narrative device and not a fact.
The purest version
Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee’s The Sentry (2000) is the cleanest statement of the whole pattern.
Robert Reynolds is a golden, cape-wearing, sunlit paragon. The Void is his shadow. Not an enemy. A by-product, generated by the same power, inseparable from it, and impossible to defeat without switching off the hero.
Jake Schreier’s Thunderbolts* (2025) put that duality on screen with Lewis Pullman’s Bob, and the design logic is brutally simple: the brighter and more heavily branded the costume, the larger the darkness it is drawing behind it.
If a costume is a claim, then a uniform is a claim with a government standing behind it. Which means it inherits every failure mode a government has.
Captain America’s outfit is not concealment. Steve Rogers’ face is visible. The cowl hides nothing that matters. What the costume does is convert a man into a national symbol, and Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) — costumes by Anna B. Sheppard — is unusually honest about the mechanism. Rogers spends a full sequence touring in a USO showgirl production wearing what is explicitly a propaganda garment. He was a poster before he was a soldier.
The uniform asks the public to extend trust in advance of conduct. That is enormously useful, and it is structurally dangerous, and Marvel has been picking at it since Watergate.
Steve Englehart’s “Secret Empire” arc (Captain America #169–176, 1974) follows a conspiracy into the White House, where Rogers finds a figure — unnamed, heavily implied — who shoots himself in front of him. Rogers’ response in Captain America #180 (December 1974) is to abandon the uniform entirely and become Nomad, the Man Without a Country.
Englehart then has him trip over his own cape.
That is a joke and it is also a thesis. A symbol improvised out of disillusionment carries no authority, because a costume without a constituency is just clothing.
John Walker is the whole argument in one man
Mark Gruenwald built the definitive version.
Captain America #323 (November 1986) introduces John Walker as the Super-Patriot, a man selling the aesthetics of American heroism as a stage act. In #333 (September 1987), when Rogers resigns rather than take direct orders from the government, Walker is handed the shield, the colors, and full official sanction.
He has the complete apparatus of legitimacy. Every single component.
What follows is a slow, methodical demonstration that the apparatus transfers authority without transferring temperament. Walker escalates. Walker kills. Walker is manipulated and breaks down. By #354 (June 1989) he has been quietly reassigned as U.S.Agent in a black version of the same costume, the design finally conceding that this man was always closer to enforcement than to symbolism.
Malcolm Spellman’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), directed by Kari Skogland, adapts this with real precision. Wyatt Russell’s Walker is not a fool. He is a decorated soldier with three Medals of Honor who has been handed a symbol built for a completely different kind of man.
Episode four, “The Whole World Is Watching,” ends with him executing a surrendering Flag-Smasher in a public square with the shield.
The shot that follows — vibranium, dripping, in daylight, on camera — is the single most efficient statement of this entire argument in the franchise. The costume was designed to mean restraint. It is now a murder weapon in front of witnesses. And it is still, unmistakably, the costume.
Nothing about the object changed. Everything about what it proves did.
The man the uniform was never offered to
Isaiah Bradley carried an unpainted prototype shield into a Korean POW camp and came home to thirty years in a cell. The full case is laid out in Isaiah Bradley’s Truth.
The series pairs Walker with Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley, drawn from Robert Morales and Kyle Baker’s Truth: Red, White & Black (2003), seven issues, one of the hardest books Marvel has ever put its logo on.
Isaiah’s case is that the uniform is not neutral property. It confers legitimacy selectively, and the state handing it out also decides whose service gets remembered. He carried a crude unpainted shield into an enemy camp, saved men his own army had written off, and was rewarded with shackles and three decades of experimentation while his wife was told he was dead.
Sam Wilson’s argument in episode six is therefore not that the symbol is clean. It is that a symbol can be claimed and re-argued by somebody willing to state plainly what it ought to mean. Julius Onah’s Captain America: Brave New World (2025) finishes the thought by putting a golden statue of Isaiah in the Smithsonian, in Korean War fatigues, holding the unpainted shield.
The darkest possible version
The comics reach the terminal case in Nick Spencer’s Secret Empire (2017), following the “Hail Hydra” reveal in Steve Rogers: Captain America #1 (May 2016).
Here the costume is entirely intact. The man inside it is the correct man, with the correct history and the correct face. The institution endorses him.
And he is a fascist.
Nothing visual has changed. The claim is unaltered, fully legible, and completely false. If any single story exists to prove that appearance is not a moral test, it is this one.
The coda nobody planned
Frank Castle’s skull, introduced with the character in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (February 1974) by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, was designed as a warning label for a mass murderer.
It has since been adopted as insignia by police units and soldiers. Marvel addressed it inside the fiction in Matthew Rosenberg’s Punisher #13 (2019), where Frank tears the decal off a squad car and tells the officers wearing it, in plain language, that they are not the same.
A symbol, once released, gets claimed by whoever finds it useful. That is a costume problem in the most literal sense available, and it happened in the real world, to a real logo, on real vehicles.
5. Anyone can hold the hammer. That is not the same as deserving it
Marvel costumes outlive their wearers. Partly this is commercial — a trademark is more durable than a character — but it produces the richest ethical machinery in the catalogue: a hard distinction between possessing a symbol and deserving one.
Mjolnir states the rule as text. Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. The inscription makes the hammer a device that audits its wearer continuously, forever, with no appeal process.
Walt Simonson tested it in Thor #337 (November 1983) by having Beta Ray Bill — an alien who looks nothing whatsoever like a Norse god — lift it clean off the ground.
Jason Aaron detonated it in Original Sin #7 (2014), where Nick Fury whispers something into Thor’s ear and the hammer simply stops accepting him. Worthiness revoked, no explanation offered, which is the cruelest possible implementation of the mechanic.
Then Aaron and Russell Dauterman handed it to Jane Foster in Thor #1 (October 2014), and added the detail that transforms the entire conceit. Jane has breast cancer. Every transformation into the Mighty Thor undoes her chemotherapy.
She picks it up anyway. Repeatedly. Knowing.
That is worthiness demonstrated in the only currency that actually counts, and it is why the storyline still holds up better than anything else built on the same device.
Mjolnir is the thesis of this essay rendered as an object: a piece of equipment that re-audits its holder continuously and can revoke the verdict without notice. Tracked across the films in Thor’s chronological MCU appearances.
Marvel supplies a second auditing garment in the Cloak of Levitation, which in Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange (2016) selects Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange mid-fight, over his stated objections. A costume with opinions about its wearer is a very direct way of establishing that these objects are not property.
The shield’s chain of custody
The shield is the contested object above all others.
It changes hands to Walker in 1987. To Bucky Barnes in Captain America #34 (2008), after Brubaker’s “Death of Captain America,” in a costume that carries a handgun and a knife. To Sam Wilson in All-New Captain America #1 (January 2015) by Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen, and onward into Nick Spencer’s Captain America: Sam Wilson (2015–17), which spends its whole run asking whether a Black Captain America is permitted to hold political positions in public.
Every new wearer redesigns the claim, because every wearer has a different account of what the object obliges them to do.
The MCU handles this with more care than it usually gets credit for. The Russos have Chris Evans drop the shield on a concrete floor in Captain America: Civil War (2016) after Robert Downey Jr. tells him his father made it and it was never his. Three years later, in Avengers: Endgame (2019), the same object is handed to Anthony Mackie, and the exchange is about fit rather than power. Then a six-episode series makes him refuse it, watch it be misused in the worst possible way, and finally choose it, in a suit built in Wakanda.
Making your own instead
Miles Morales debuts in Ultimate Fallout #4 (August 2011), by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, and immediately refuses the visual inheritance. Black and red. Not red and blue.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) — directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman under Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature — builds its climax around exactly this. Shameik Moore’s Miles spray-paints his own suit rather than wear Peter’s. The film’s central line, that you never know when you are ready so it is always a leap of faith, is a direct argument that worthiness cannot be conferred in advance. It can only be demonstrated afterwards.
Kamala Khan is the most deliberate case in print. Ms. Marvel #1 (February 2014) — G. Willow Wilson writing, Adrian Alphona on art, Sana Amanat editing, costume designed by Jamie McKelvie — opens with Kamala’s instinct to become Carol Danvers exactly, and then has her discover that the outfit is absurd on her body and in her life. What she builds instead is assembled from a burkini and a scarf: a costume made from the collision of the cultures she actually inhabits.
Bisha K. Ali’s 2022 series adds the perfect closing beat by having Kamala’s mother sew the finished suit, which converts the costume from a private fantasy into an act of family recognition.
And then there is theft
J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck’s Kraven’s Last Hunt (1987) — six parts, across Web of Spider-Man #31–32, Amazing Spider-Man #293–294 and Spectacular Spider-Man #131–132 — has Kraven shoot Spider-Man, bury him, put on his costume, and go out as Spider-Man.
New York cannot tell the difference.
Dan Slott’s Superior Spider-Man #1 (January 2013), with Ryan Stegman, does it from the inside. Otto Octavius occupies Peter Parker’s body and suit, and the costume mutates to suit him, sprouting talons and mechanical arms as his personality asserts itself through the fabric.
In both cases the symbol is fully operational and the wearer is wrong, and the public reads the outfit rather than the conduct — exactly as Phil Sheldon did in 1994.
6. Who has the right to know the face underneath?
Because a costume is a claim, removing it is an exercise of power. Marvel treats unmasking as a political question rather than a dramatic one: who gets to know, and who benefits from the knowing.
The comics tie it directly to state control. Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s “Days of Future Past” (Uncanny X-Men #141–142, 1981) constructs a fascist future out of registration lists and Sentinels — and mutant identity is not a costume at all. It is a body that cannot be removed, which is why the X-Men’s story has always been about visibility rather than disguise.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s New X-Men (2001) makes the corollary by putting the team in black leather and declaring the costume obsolete. If the world already knows what you are, spandex is a liability.
Civil War (2006–07), by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, turns registration into the central conflict of the entire publishing line. The Superhuman Registration Act requires identities to be filed with the government, and in Civil War #2, Spider-Man — the character whose whole ethical architecture rests on the mask — takes it off at a press conference.
The image was engineered to feel like a violation of the medium’s oldest rule, and the consequences proved the mask had been load-bearing all along. The people around Peter became reachable. Marvel eventually had to undo the reveal with magic in “One More Day,” which is itself an admission of how structurally necessary the concealment had been.
Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev did the cleaner version with Daredevil in 2002, when Matt Murdock’s identity is sold to a tabloid by Sammy Silke and printed. The brilliance of that run is that Matt cannot fight it. There is no villain to punch. There is a newspaper, a rumor, and a legal career that quietly becomes untenable.
Forced exposure works as an attack precisely because it is not violence.
The MCU had to rebuild the stakes from scratch
Marvel Studios largely dissolved the secret identity tradition. Tony Stark announces himself at the end of Iron Man, reversing decades of comics in which Iron Man was publicly described as Stark’s bodyguard. The Avengers are celebrities. The Sokovia Accords are about oversight and jurisdiction, not names.
Which is why Jon Watts’ Spider-Man trilogy had to restore the danger single-handed, and does it with real cruelty.
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) gives Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck a dying declaration engineered as media. Doctored drone footage, delivered to J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson, framing Spider-Man for murder and naming Peter Parker on a public screen.
Beck is an ex-Stark employee who lost credit for his own work. His revenge is not to kill Peter. It is to strip the mask off him, because he understands better than anyone in the film that the image is the weapon. He was, after all, a special effects man before he was a villain, and his own costume is the most conventionally heroic-looking thing in the movie: cape, fishbowl helmet, gold and green, the full classical package, worn by a fraud.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) then spends a whole film on the cost, and resolves it by having the entire world forget Peter Parker existed. Autonomy restored through total erasure, which is a bleak thing to call a happy ending.
Uncostuming as a bureaucratic act
Marvel’s most sophisticated recent statement on this is Loki (2021), showrun by Michael Waldron.
The TVA’s first action on capturing Loki is to strip the Asgardian costume — horns, leathers, the entire royal claim — and issue him a beige jumpsuit stamped VARIANT.
That is not a disguise. It is an uncostuming. The bureaucratic negation of a person’s own account of himself, done with a laundry label.
Horns, then a beige jumpsuit stamped VARIANT, then a crown he assembles himself. Across Loki’s chronological run through the MCU, the costume is taken away by a filing department and earned back by conduct — the whole argument in one character.
Everything Loki does across two seasons is an attempt to earn a self-description back, and the finale grants it by having him assemble a new crown of horns and accept a position of genuine, terrible responsibility. Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, meanwhile, is the same person with a different name and a broken horn — the design arguing that the identity was never the outfit.
The Skrulls of Secret Invasion (2023) take the logic to its limit: beings for whom appearance is fully detachable from being, and therefore beings for whom the entire visual moral language of the genre is meaningless. Mystique, since Ms. Marvel #16–18 (1978), has been making the same point for far longer.
If a face is a costume, then no face is evidence.
7. The second skin, and what happens when you start to want it
Some Marvel costumes are not clothing at all. They are prosthetics. They change what the wearer can physically do, which means they change what the wearer is tempted to do.
Iron Man’s armor is the founding case, and its publication history is a history of escalating intimacy.
The Mark I in Tales of Suspense #39 is a machine Tony climbs into. By “Armor Wars” (Iron Man #225–232, 1987–88, Michelinie and Layton) the suits are so central to his sense of self that Tony commits what amounts to serial assault to reclaim his own technology out of other people’s bodies. Warren Ellis and Adi Granov’s Extremis (Iron Man volume 4 #1–6, 2005–06) completes the move by putting the interface inside him: armor stored in the hollows of his bones, summoned by thought.
Granov’s designs from that run fed directly into the Mark III built for Favreau’s film by Stan Winston Studio, in what turned out to be Winston’s final work — he died in June 2008, six weeks after the film opened, and the crew who built that armor went on to found Legacy Effects. And the MCU kept escalating, until the nanotech of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) made the suit a fluid that lives on Tony’s skin.
When there is no gap between man and armor, there is no moment of deliberate decision to put it on.
Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 (2013) diagnoses the result as pathology. Tony sleepless, building compulsively, unable to be a person without the shell, having panic attacks in a diner. The film’s resolution is him blowing up the entire fleet.
Rhodey supplies the control case. When James Rhodes takes the armor in Iron Man #170 (May 1983) while Tony is drinking, the neural interface damages him. When he finally gets his own in Iron Man #282 (1992), the War Machine design is armor built for a soldier rather than an inventor — grey, weaponized, military. Same technology. Different claim. The visual difference is the argument.
The Black Panther habit is a second skin with a moral built into its physics. In Coogler’s film the vibranium suit absorbs kinetic energy and releases it, which means the suit literally converts violence done to T’Challa into violence he can do. A costume whose primary function is retaliation.
Carter’s design work grounds it in Wakandan textile and tribal reference rather than sci-fi minimalism, so the suit reads as inheritance rather than equipment. And the film pointedly stages both ritual combats at Warrior Falls with the suit and the powers stripped away, insisting that the throne has to be won by the body.
The symbiote is the endpoint
The alien costume in Amazing Spider-Man #252 arrives as a gift. Lighter. Stronger. Generates its own webbing. Changes shape on command. Responds to thought.
Then it turns out to be alive, to feed on adrenaline, to move Peter’s body while he sleeps, and to refuse removal.
Sam Raimi filmed the essential scene in Spider-Man 3 (2007) — Tobey Maguire tearing the black suit off in a church bell tower while it screams. And the film’s least-loved material is doing real thematic work. The strut. The fringe. The dance. Topher Grace’s Eddie Brock.
Because the symbiote does not make Peter evil. It makes him pleased with himself. It amplifies what was already in there. Anger becomes fluent. Resentment becomes articulate. Petty cruelty becomes stylish. And by the time Eddie takes it on, the costume has learned exactly how to be worn.
That is the crucial move, and it is why the symbiote outranks every other second-skin story in the catalogue. Evil here is not imposed from outside and it is not simply innate. It is worn, then enjoyed, then internalized.
The horror is discovering you cannot take off something you have started to want.
Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s The Vision (2015–16, twelve issues) finds the most disturbing version of this idea in the least likely material. A suburban house in Arlington, Virginia. A sweater. A wife. Two children. A lawn.
Vision constructs a costume of normalcy, and the family kills people to protect the costume.
Nothing in that book is a mask, and everything in it is.
8. What is left when you take it all away?
Marvel’s actual moral test arrives when the visual proof of heroism is removed. This is why the franchise returns to it compulsively, and why the returns are almost always the best scenes in the run.
Peter Parker without the suit
Amazing Spider-Man #50 (July 1967), “Spider-Man No More!” — the John Romita Sr. cover of Peter walking away with the costume stuffed in a garbage can — establishes the template the character will repeat for sixty years.
And Amazing Spider-Man #33, the climax of the Master Planner saga, gives the definitive image: Peter pinned under machinery, dying, lifting it anyway. He is wearing the costume in that panel and the costume is doing absolutely nothing. Only the decision matters.
Jon Watts put the thesis in dialogue in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), when Tony tells Peter that if he is nothing without the suit then he should not have it. And No Way Home pays it off by ending with Peter — erased from every memory, no Stark technology, no Avengers contacts, no May — sewing a costume by hand in a rented Queens apartment.
The final suit of the trilogy is the cheapest one. It is also the only one he made himself.
Steve Rogers without the shield
Englehart’s Nomad. Gruenwald’s resignation in #333. The Russos’ shot of the shield left on a concrete floor in Civil War.
All three make the same claim: the ethics were never resident in the object. Rogers goes on doing exactly the same things in a dark stealth suit with no flag on it, and nobody watching is confused about who he is.
Sam Wilson without the serum
This is the MCU’s sharpest version, and Brave New World leans on it deliberately.
Sam has no super-soldier serum. He has a suit, a pair of wings, pararescue training and a decision — opposite a President who becomes the Red Hulk, in Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross, a man whose transformation is the purest available statement of power without restraint.
A Captain America who is only a man is an argument that Steve Rogers’ body was never the qualifying feature.
Thor without Mjolnir
Branagh’s Thor strands him in New Mexico, unable to lift the hammer out of a crater in the rain, and the whole arc is about earning it back.
Waititi destroys the hammer outright in Ragnarok and has Anthony Hopkins’ Odin ask whether he is Thor, the God of Hammers — the franchise’s cleanest one-line dismissal of costume-as-identity.
Endgame then reunites him with a past-timeline Mjolnir while he is overweight, drinking, and visibly broken, and lets him say that he is still worthy. Worthiness as something that survives the total collapse of the image.
Tony Stark without functioning armor
Iron Man 3 dumps him in Rose Hill, Tennessee with a dead suit and a child’s toolbox, and the sequence exists for exactly one purpose: to establish that the engineer is the asset.
Iron Man #128 had already done the emotional version. Tony out of the armor and in a bottle, facing the one enemy the suit cannot be deployed against.
T’Challa without the Panther powers
Killmonger burns the heart-shaped herb garden, and that is a very deliberate script choice. It destroys the mechanism of inherited authority, so the conflict has to be settled by argument, alliance and conduct instead.
T’Challa returns depowered. He wins by persuading the Jabari and by being right.
Loki stripped of royal status
Horns confiscated. Name replaced with a laundry label. Throne gone.
What survives is loyalty to Mobius and Sylvie, which is the single last thing anybody would have predicted from the design in Journey into Mystery #85.
Jane Foster without her health
Aaron and Dauterman’s arrangement, adapted in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) with Natalie Portman, is the purest form of the test available. The costume actively costs her the body underneath.
She keeps putting it on.
The counter-example, and why it does not simplify anything
Marvel’s most self-certain villains need none of this.
Thanos — from Jim Starlin’s introduction in Iron Man #55 (February 1973), through Infinity Gauntlet (1991), to Josh Brolin’s performance across Infinity War and Endgame — ends the story barefaced. Armor discarded. Sitting on a porch, watching a sunrise, at peace.
Keloid scars along the chin and left cheek, and nothing covering them. Thanos does not conceal because he does not experience the need — the textbook presentation of the god complex.
Ego, Hela, Namor, Arthur Harrow with broken glass in his sandals: none of them conceal anything.
The uncovered face is not honesty. It is the absence of any felt need to justify. These characters have moved past shame, which means they have moved past the entire question the costume exists to ask.
But Marvel refuses to let even this become a clean rule.
James Gunn’s High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), played by Chukwudi Iwuji, is a barefaced ideologue preaching perfection — and his face turns out to be a prosthetic over ruin. When it is torn away, what is underneath is raw and wrong.
The man lecturing the universe about flawlessness was hiding a wound the whole time.
Even the anti-mask reading is not a reliable test. There is no reliable test. That is the point.

The claim and the conduct
The tidy reading of all this would be that Marvel dresses good characters brightly and bad characters darkly, and that the exceptions are clever subversions of a stable rule.
The evidence does not support it.
Black Panther wears black. Moon Knight wears white and hurts people. Mysterio looks more like a classical superhero than Spider-Man does. Wanda Maximoff’s heroic crimson becomes, across WandaVision and Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), the most threatening color in the franchise — and the Scarlet Witch headdress she assumes in the WandaVision finale, having worn it as a Halloween costume three episodes earlier, is the exact moment she stops being a person and becomes a prophecy.
HYDRA wore S.H.I.E.L.D. patches for seventy years. Steve Rogers wore his own uniform while serving a fascist regime. Hugh Jackman finally putting on the yellow-and-blue in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is funny precisely because twenty-four years of films had already established that the outfit was never the character.
What holds up is narrower and considerably more useful.
Marvel’s costumes are claims. Performative statements — this is what I intend to stand for — addressed to a public that has to make snap judgments, and they do that communicative job extremely well. They simply carry no evidence. The claim is entered at the moment of dressing. The verification happens afterwards, in conduct, usually unwitnessed.
Which produces the distinction the whole universe actually runs on.
The hero treats the costume as an obligation that must be continually discharged. Peter Parker’s mantra from the closing caption of Amazing Fantasy #15 is a statement about ongoing debt, not about status. Jane Foster picks up a hammer that is killing her. Sam Wilson refuses the shield until he can say what he means by it, then carries it with no serum in his blood. Kamala Khan stitches a costume out of the specific life she has actually lived. Mjolnir and the Cloak of Levitation are this idea made literal: garments that re-audit their wearer every single day and can revoke the verdict without notice.
The villain treats the costume, the title, the armor or the throne as the justification itself. Obadiah Stane has the suit and therefore may take the company. John Walker has the shield and therefore may execute a man in a public square. Killmonger has the birthright and therefore may arm the world. HYDRA-Rogers has the uniform and therefore is accountable to nobody wearing less. Thanos has the certainty and therefore does not require a face.
In every case the symbol has been converted from an obligation into a permit. That conversion — not a color palette, not a mask, not a silhouette — is what Marvel means by evil.
Which makes the genre’s central image quietly ironic.
We are looking at people who have chosen to be legible, inside a body of stories constructed to demonstrate that legibility proves nothing.
The costume tells you what somebody wants believed about them. The only reliable information is in the choices made inside it. And Marvel’s most honest scenes are always the ones where the suit is gone, the hammer is broken, the serum was never administered, the powers have been burned out of the garden — and the person is still standing there, unwatched, deciding what to do.
