Mortality beneath the claws
The film opens on 9 August 1945. Logan is a prisoner near Nagasaki when the atomic bomb falls, and he saves Japanese officer Ichirō Yashida by shielding him inside a well. The main story occurs decades later, several years after Jean’s death.
Logan has withdrawn from the X-Men and dreams of Jean while living in the wilderness. The dying Yashida summons him to Japan and offers to transfer Logan’s healing ability into himself. Logan refuses, but a parasite placed near his heart suppresses his regeneration and forces him to experience injury as an immediate threat.
Protecting Mariko returns purpose to Logan’s life. He removes the parasite, confronts Yashida inside the Silver Samurai armour and loses his adamantium claws. His natural bone claws grow back, exposing the mutant beneath the metal.

Laura inherits the claws, healing and rage that defined Wolverine, but she still has a future. Logan gradually accepts responsibility for her and the other mutant children. His final battle against X-24, a younger clone reduced to pure violence, becomes a confrontation with the version of himself that institutions always wanted to create.
