No other Marvel villain is this hard to surgically remove from one specific family. Take Doctor Octopus out of Spider-Man's life and you still have a functioning hero. Take the Fantastic Four out of Victor von Doom's and there is almost nothing left standing: no scar, no crown, no rivalry, no reason to build the mask in the first place. Sixty-three years and eleven landmark comics deep — The Astromech's full reading order already walked that history issue by issue — the more interesting question isn't what happened between Doom and the Fantastic Four. It's what he actually is to each of them, because it is never the same answer twice.

To Reed Richards, he is an unhealed wound wearing a crown. To Sue Storm, he is a kidnapper who has never once managed to fool her. To Ben Grimm, he is barely worth the effort of real hatred. To Johnny Storm, he is a threat that has, at least once, made surprisingly practical use of him. And to two children who were never supposed to matter to him at all, he is something closer to an actual uncle. Reed Richards: The Rivalry That Built Him

Every account of Victor von Doom returns to the same afternoon. At university, a classmate named Reed Richards finds the flaw in Victor's calculations for a machine built to reach the realm of the dead. Victor ignores the correction. The machine explodes, the scar it leaves sends him to Tibet, and the armour that comes back is as much a monument to that single afternoon as it is a weapon. Everything after is variation: Doom steals the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic in Fantastic Four #57-60 and loses it because Reed spots the one condition his pride overlooked; Books of Doom lets Victor narrate his own origin as though history itself owes him the final cut, except Reed's mere existence keeps disrupting the story Doom wants to tell; Unthinkable ends with Reed carrying a permanent scar of his own, finally matched to Victor's. By Secret Wars (2015), Doom has taken everything Reed ever had — his wife, his children, his place in history — and still cannot build a version of himself that doesn't eventually confess, out loud, that Reed would have done it better.

Sue Storm: The Queen He Never Earned

Sue is the first person Doom ever uses as leverage — he kidnaps her in Fantastic Four #5 before the team has even learned to trust one another — and the pattern barely changes for decades. What does change is how quickly she reads him. Across the archive, The Astromech's own account of the character notes that Sue is "frequently the person who sees through Doom's theatre fastest," and the two Secret Wars only sharpen the point. On the 2015 Battleworld, Doom makes her his queen outright — Sue Storm Richards becomes Sue Storm von Doom in every way except consent — with Franklin and Valeria raised as their children and Reed edited out of the family's memory entirely. It is the single clearest example in the entire mythology of Victor mistaking appropriation for intimacy: he can rewrite an empire's history, install himself at the head of her family, and still never once ask her.

Ben Grimm: The Rival Who Never Wanted the Rivalry

Ben gets the least personal treatment from Doom and, in a strange way, the most honest. Their first encounter in Fantastic Four #5 briefly mistakes him for Blackbeard — a joke at Ben's expense that sets the tone for decades of Victor treating him as muscle rather than a mind worth engaging. That dismissal is exactly what makes Ben's later arcs land. On the original 1984 Battleworld, freed from the usual rules of his own body, Ben discovers he can change between human and Thing at will — and chooses, for a while, to stay behind rather than go home. On the 2015 Battleworld, Doom hands him one of the regime's most thankless jobs, manning the Shield at the edge of the civilised world, and Ben abandons that post the moment it matters, helping topple the throne rather than guard its border. By Infamous Iron Man, Ben has become Doom's most persistent real-world sceptic — investigating him for S.H.I.E.L.D., refusing to let a few heroic acts erase a lifetime of history. Victor never respects Ben the way he begrudgingly respects Reed. Ben has never needed that respect to keep showing up.

The Doom verdict: Victor mistakes Ben Grimm for the least dangerous member of the family. Ben is the one who keeps outlasting him.

Johnny Storm: Fuel for Somebody Else's Fire

Of the four, Johnny has the thinnest personal history with Doom — mostly a convenient target, rarely a rival worth Victor's full attention. Which is what makes Secret Wars (2015) the strangest chapter in this entire family history. On Doom's patchwork Battleworld, Johnny Storm does not merely serve the regime. He is the regime's sun, literally burning in the sky to give a fabricated civilisation its daylight. It remains one of the most unsettling single images Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić produced across the whole event, precisely because it happens to the family member Doom has always taken least seriously. Victor converts the person he thinks matters least into something his entire fake world cannot survive without — and never seems to notice the irony.

The Doom verdict: Victor will turn anyone into infrastructure if the throne needs it — even, maybe especially, the one relative he never bothered to fear.

Franklin and Valeria: The Children Doom Actually Listens To

The one relationship in this entire history that isn't built on rivalry, kidnapping or conquest belongs to Reed and Sue's own children. In FF #1-5, "Tomorrow" (2011), it is Valeria Richards — a child — who recruits a mentally damaged Doom into the Future Foundation, offering to restore his genius in exchange for his help against the Council of Reeds. He accepts, and something rare happens: Doom contributes to a shared project rather than attacking one. Valeria is one of the only people alive who can negotiate with Victor von Doom directly and be taken seriously for it. That unusual regard curdles into something far darker on the 2015 Battleworld, where Doom raises both Franklin and Valeria as his own — a found family built on erasure rather than earned trust. And it is precisely this thread that The Astromech's breakdown of how The Fantastic Four: First Steps sets up Avengers: Doomsday picks back up on screen: five years after Franklin is born wielding reality itself, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doom is shown leaning silently over the boy's bed. With Molecule Man nowhere in this timeline, the implication is hard to miss — Doom may already be auditioning his next battery, and his next child.

Key Fandom Moments: The Relationship in Its Own Shorthand

Longtime readers have their own private canon of Doom-and-FF beats that never quite make the "defining issues" lists but come up in every fan conversation anyway. The Doombot twist tops most of them: Victor's habit of fielding robot decoys is so constant that no on-panel defeat of Doom is ever fully trusted until several issues later — "it was just a Doombot" has become one of the longest-running punchlines in the genre. Right behind it is Latveria's diplomatic immunity, a recurring plot device in which the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and even the United Nations discover that a sitting head of state cannot simply be arrested — Marvel's sharpest running joke about how sovereignty can launder a supervillain. Somewhere between a Latverian throne room and a Los Angeles soundstage, Victor von Doom is currently mid-leap. For sixty-three years he has existed entirely on the page: a folded steel silhouette drawn by Jack Kirby's pencil, refined by a dozen writers who each believed they had finally found the real man under the mask. That era just ended. Robert Downey Jr. put the armour on, the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps confirmed it over a sleeping Franklin Richards, and Avengers: Doomsday now carries the single heaviest piece of casting news in MCU history into cinemas on 18 December 2026. Doom is jumping from the leaves of the comics straight onto the film reel, and almost none of what makes that jump frightening was invented for the screen. It was already sitting in longboxes.

Doom refuses the Beyonder's contest and targets its author instead.

Trivia: the series was commissioned to support a Mattel toy line, and its huge cast and neutral-planet setting were shaped directly by that licensing brief; years later, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars retconned Wade Wilson into this exact event and then erased everyone's memory of him, so any completist reread of Battleworld I now carries a joke stapled to it.

Doom requests help, not a crown — the oldest, least armoured motive he has.
His apparent betrayal of Strange is a self-wounding plan, not genuine treachery.

Trivia: Mike Mignola's Gothic, iconography-heavy pencils here landed just a few years before he left mainstream superhero art to create Hellboy — plenty of readers now recognise this graphic novel as an early sketch of that signature style.

On screen: Marvel Studios has shown no sign yet of touching Mephisto or Cynthia's soul, which leaves this entire, definitive piece of Doom's mythology untouched and available for a future film to spend.

Reed, forced to admit that genius in one discipline is not mastery of another, studies under Doctor Strange and finally drives Victor into Hell, who retaliates on the way down by scarring Reed's face for good.

Defining moments

Doom murders Valeria specifically to purchase greater magical power.
He targets Franklin and Valeria Richards because hurting Reed's family outweighs victory on its own.
Reed permanently carries a scar from this fight — the rivalry made literally visible.

Trivia: the story is considered severe enough that later writers have quietly walked back some of its punishments and deaths, though its central character judgement about Doom has proven much harder to undo.

On screen: the MCU's Doom has so far been eerily calm — a cloak and a mask leaning silently over a sleeping child — but "Unthinkable" is the proof text for exactly how dark this character is allowed to go once the mask comes off.

The Doom verdict: when Victor values possession over personhood, romance becomes sacrifice and brilliance becomes abuse.

Doom accepts help restoring his own mind — a rare admission of need.
His enemies in the Council of Reeds mirror Reed's own capacity for cold utilitarianism, complicating the usual hero-villain read.

Trivia: this is one of the only sustained periods in mainstream continuity where Doom works inside the Richards family's own headquarters rather than attacking it — a small-scale dry run for the found-family dynamic Secret Wars would blow up to an entire planet four years later.

On screen: Valeria recruiting Doom here is the exact dynamic First Steps' mid-credits scene appears to invert — this time, five years on, it's Doom quietly recruiting Franklin, not the other way around.

When survivors from the old universes arrive and refuse to forget, Doom kills Strange rather than tolerate the truth — and that murder, not a bigger threat, is what finally turns his own regime against him. Reed confronts Victor directly; Doom admits, out loud, that Reed would have built a better world, and Molecule Man transfers the power away the instant he hears it.

Defining moments

Doom helps kill the Beyonders and genuinely saves fragments of creation from total erasure.
He builds a divine monarchy that hands him Reed's family and Reed's place in history.

The premise is worse than a war precisely because it barely looks like one: crime drops, conflicts stop, and the Fantastic Four, and the wider hero community, are left asking the one question sixty-plus years of comics have been building toward. If a tyrant's rule genuinely works on its own terms, is refusing to kneel still heroism, or just habit?

Defining moments

Doom becomes head of state everywhere on Earth simultaneously, with no second Battleworld required.
His rule is depicted producing real, measurable benefits — the "only I can save humanity" thesis stated in its purest, least deniable form.

Every Marvel villain wants something. Only one of them has ever actually been handed it, ruled with it, and then quietly admitted out loud that it wasn't enough. Victor von Doom is Marvel's most honest tyrant, because he never pretends the cruelty is incidental.

Across sixty years of comics and two entire planets rebuilt in his image, the story keeps testing the same claim: that if you gave Victor von Doom reality itself, he would run it better than the man who beat him to a diploma.

Twice, Marvel has let him try.

Twice, the failure has been more interesting than the victory - and the aftershocks of both attempts are still setting up the next five years of Marvel's cinema.

The Man Behind the Mask

Every empire needs an origin story, and Doom's is a Gothic one. Born into a persecuted Romani camp in the country he will one day rule, Victor loses his mother, Cynthia, while still a child, inheriting nothing from her but books of witchcraft, and loses his father, Werner, a healer killed shielding his son once a hostile regime turns on them both.

At university, Reed Richards spots the flaw in Victor's machine for reaching the realm of the dead; Victor ignores the correction, the device explodes, and the scar it leaves behind sends him to Tibet, where monks forge the iron mask he will never again remove by choice. He returns home, deposes Latveria's ruler, and builds a monarchy on the one lesson the accident taught him: that being right and being humiliated are, for Victor von Doom, the same event.

Everything after that is variation on a theme. He traps the Silver Surfer, steals the Power Cosmic through a machine, and rules as a minor god for four glorious issues before Reed notices the one restriction Doom's pride never thought to check. He descends into Mephisto's court to buy back his mother's mortgaged soul, and wins — but only by engineering his own apparent damnation first. Battleworld I: The Arena He Hijacked

Marvel has tested that verdict against the largest stage available exactly twice, and both times Doom has treated the test as beneath him. In 1984, the Beyonder drags heroes and villains to a patchwork planet called Battleworld and offers the victors their heart's desire in exchange for destroying their enemies. Everyone else on the board plays the game as advertised. Doom alone recognises the offer as an insult - a reward still leaves the giver above the recipient, and Doom cannot tolerate that hierarchy.

So he restores Ultron, builds Titania and Volcana out of two ordinary women, and turns Klaw's living sound body into a siphon capable of channelling stolen cosmic power. When Galactus feeds on his own worldship, Doom takes the overflow, defeats the Beyonder outright, and rules Battleworld as an actual god.

It lasts exactly as long as his fear of losing it allows. Absolute power makes Victor's private doubts consequential, and his subconscious terror that the heroes might return is what quietly helps bring them back, alongside the healer Zsaji, who burns out her own life restoring them. Captain America simply will not stay dead, will not kneel, and will not stop returning — and a man who can rewrite matter cannot rewrite that one refusal.

The Beyonder reclaims his stolen power, and everyone goes home carrying consequences: Spider-Man in a new black costume that will eventually become Venom, Titania and Volcana newly loose in continuity, Ben Grimm choosing, for the first time, whether to be the Thing at all.

The Doom verdict: place Victor von Doom inside another god's game and he will not play it — he will audit it, find the exploit, and steal the house.

Battleworld II: The Civilisation He Authored

Thirty-one years later, Jonathan Hickman simply hands him the win. The Incursions destroy the Multiverse outright, and Doom — channelling Owen Reece, the Molecule Man, as both battery and hostage — salvages the wreckage of a thousand dying realities into a second Battleworld. This time there is no theft to undo, no external power to reclaim, and no time limit. Doom rules for eight worshipped years as God Emperor: Sue Storm is his queen, Franklin and Valeria are raised as his children, Doctor Strange serves as his Sheriff, and Reed Richards has been edited out of his own family's memory so thoroughly that no one on Battleworld even misses him.

That admission is the whole story in miniature. Reed tells Victor his world is built from fear and envy; Doom argues he saved what could be saved. Both are true. Then Doom concedes, out loud, that Reed would have done it better — and Molecule Man, hearing the one thing Doom has spent his life refusing to say, simply transfers the power away. Reed does not build a new empire on the old one. He heals Victor's face instead, which is mercy and challenge in the same gesture: Doom can no longer treat the scar as the whole explanation for what he chooses to be.

The Doom verdict: Victor can build a religion, a family and a planet out of wreckage — he still cannot build a version of himself that Reed Richards doesn't have to lose to.

The Throne Waiting in Latveria's Future

Which is why the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands like a verdict rather than a tease. Five years after Franklin Richards is born wielding reality itself back into his mother's dead body, a green cloak and a riveted iron mask lean silently over his bed. The Astromech's breakdown of how First Steps sets up Avengers: Doomsday makes the arithmetic explicit: with Molecule Man nowhere in this timeline, Franklin is simply the next battery, and Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom has already chosen his Battleworld before the Multiverse has finished dying.

The Avengers films were never going to end anywhere else. They are, as The Astromech's chronology of the Avengers saga puts it, the load-bearing walls of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe — and every wall Doom has ever built exists to hold up a throne. Avengers: Doomsday arrives on 18 December 2026 to test that claim at last; Avengers: Secret Wars closes it a year later, on 17 December 2027. The comics have already shown their working twice over. Give Victor von Doom enough power to remake reality, and reality will spend years quietly, gorgeously, waiting to find out if this is finally the time he deserves it.

The Doom verdict: he does not need to win the throne twice. He only needs the rest of the universe to keep forgetting that, both times, it eventually said no.

There Is Only Doom

Strip away the armour and the two Battleworlds tell one continuous story: a boy who could not survive being wrong, twice given the tools to make wrongness impossible, and twice discovering that the one flaw no amount of cosmic power can fix is his own need to be the exception. That is the case for Victor von Doom — not that he is right, but that he is the only character in the Marvel Universe honest enough to stake everything on being right, in public, on camera, for sixty years running. There is only Doom. The only remaining question, on Battleworld or in a theatre in December 2026, is how long the rest of the universe gets to keep disagreeing with him.

Secret Wars questions answered

Marvel has used the name Secret Wars for stories of very different sizes, but two events define it. Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck's 1984 series is the original company-wide collision. Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić's 2015 series is the conclusion to a multiversal catastrophe developed across years of Fantastic Four, FF, Avengers and New Avengers. They share a title, a planet called Battleworld and a Doctor Doom who reaches for divine power. Almost everything else has changed.

The cleanest way to understand that change is to ask who made the world and why. In 1984, the Beyonder constructs Battleworld as a laboratory for desire. Heroes and villains are specimens. Doom recognises the experiment and attempts to seize it. In 2015, Doom is no longer merely the most ambitious prisoner. He is the architect, monarch, god and unreliable historian of the last surviving world.

The argument in one sentence

The 1984 Battleworld is an arena Doctor Doom hijacks; the 2015 Battleworld is a civilisation Doctor Doom authors.

That difference is the bridge between the two events. The first asks whether Victor can take unlimited power. The second asks what he will build if he keeps it long enough to make his values into geography, religion, law and family.

After the Incursions erase almost every reality, Doom salvages fragments of dying worlds and binds them into one patchwork planet. Eight years later, its population remembers no previous existence. Doom is worshipped as creator, the domains obey his barons and history itself has been edited around his throne.

The 1984 plot: Doom refuses to remain a contestant

The original series opens with immediate spectacle. The Avengers, X-Men, members of the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man are placed opposite a collection of villains that includes Doctor Doom, Magneto, Ultron, Kang, the Enchantress, Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Molecule Man and the Wrecking Crew. Galactus is also present, although no sane person should mistake him for a team player. The Beyonder announces the terms: kill the opposition and receive everything you desire.

It is worth naming the commercial engine underneath all this. Secret Wars was commissioned to support a Mattel toy line, and Shooter wrote it to a licensing brief that required a large cast, a neutral planet and a lot of visible conflict. What makes the series endure is that Shooter used those constraints to write a genuine story about wanting things, and that Doom is the only character on the field who correctly identifies the exercise as a test rather than a war.

The heroes divide along familiar social fractures. The X-Men separate after mutant distrust becomes impossible to ignore. Magneto occupies an uncertain position between groups. The villains possess power but little trust. Doom gives their disorder a shape, although he is already pursuing a different objective. Victor has no interest in winning a prize from the Beyonder. A reward still leaves the giver above the recipient, and Doom cannot tolerate that hierarchy. This is the same appetite the god complex that drives so many great screen villains describes: the refusal to accept a ceiling drawn by anybody else.

His campaign escalates in stages. Doom restores Ultron, then uses the energies of an alien storm to genetically alter Mary MacPherran and Marsha Rosenberg into Titania and Volcana. Titania receives the strength she had always wanted; Volcana gains elemental power. The apparent generosity is also recruitment. Doom creates dependants, proving that he understands the Beyonder's promise because he makes a smaller version of it himself.

Victor next turns Klaw's living sound body into part of a mechanism capable of handling cosmic energy. He steals power associated with Galactus and his worldship, challenges the Beyonder and finally takes the greater being's power. In issue #11 the metal face becomes human again. The battlefield obeys him. Doom appears to have reached the state he has always described as natural.

The mask is the whole thesis. Doom spends both events trying to build a universe in which nobody is permitted to look behind it.

The victory fails from inside. Absolute power makes Victor's thoughts consequential, including his fear that it can be lost. The heroes he destroys return through the healing of the alien Zsaji, who burns out her own life force doing it and dies, combined with alien machinery. The Beyonder, whose essence reached Klaw by way of Spider-Woman, survives inside him and works patiently upon Doom's doubt. Captain America keeps standing up. Doom can change matter, but he cannot force this one man to validate him. The Beyonder reclaims the stolen power and the contestants eventually return home.

The original event also leaves major Marvel lore behind. Spider-Man acquires the black costume that will become the Venom symbiote, a thread still paying dividends across the entire cinematic history of Spider-Man. Titania and Volcana enter continuity. Ben Grimm discovers he can change back into human form at will on Battleworld and temporarily remains there, with She-Hulk taking his place in the Fantastic Four at his own request. Hulk holds up an immense mass of rock, captioned in-story at 150 billion tons, while his strength grows with rage. These moments made the series more than a closed tournament, even when its initial commercial purpose was to put Marvel characters and toys into one marketable frame.

One continuity wrinkle worth knowing. Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars later retconned Wade Wilson into the 1984 event and then erased everyone's memory of him. It is a joke, but it is a published joke, so any completist reading of Battleworld I now has an asterisk stapled to it.

The 2015 plot: Doom turns survival into a creation myth

Hickman's Secret Wars #1 does not begin with a gathering. It begins with failure. Earth-616 and the Ultimate Universe's Earth-1610 are the final realities, and their collision destroys them both. Reed Richards launches a life raft intended to carry his family and selected survivors through the death of existence, but part of the vessel is lost. Miles Morales hides aboard the Maker's separate raft with the Cabal. Then the Multiverse ends.

Secret Wars #2 makes the radical structural choice. It advances to Battleworld without immediately explaining the missing years. A young Thor enters a feudal civilisation in which Doom is not called a super-villain. He is called All-Father, God Emperor and saviour. The Thor Corps enforces his law. Doctor Strange serves as Sheriff of Agamotto. Barons rule territories assembled from incompatible realities. Sue is Doom's queen, Franklin and Valeria are his children, Johnny Storm burns as the sun, and Ben Grimm forms the wall at the edge of the civilised world.

This is not merely a planet with Doom in charge. It is Victor's emotional life converted into state architecture. Reed has been removed from the Richards family. The Fantastic Four has been reorganised around Victor. The two people most likely to challenge the official story, Strange and Molecule Man, are bound to the regime by complicity and secrecy. Doomstadt occupies the centre. The dangerous dead are pushed beyond a wall made from Reed's best friend.

The rafts rupture this closed history. Strange opens the Earth-616 vessel and finds Reed, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Jane Foster's Thor, Star-Lord, Phoenix-empowered Cyclops and Peter Parker. The Cabal, the Maker and Miles emerge from the other craft. These survivors remember a reality that Battleworld has been trained to forget.

Doom kills Cyclops when the Phoenix challenges him. Strange scatters the survivors across the domains rather than surrender them, and Doom kills his oldest ally for the disobedience. That murder is the hinge of the event. The regime can absorb monsters, barons and ritualised rebellion, but it cannot survive a witness choosing truth over loyalty.

The resistance grows from different directions. Jane Foster turns the Thor Corps against its god. Maximus becomes the Prophet and marches on Doomstadt. Maestro brings Worldbreakers. Black Panther and Namor recover an Infinity Gauntlet that functions in Doomstadt, then bring the zombies of the Deadlands into the battle; Namor dies in the assault. Ben Grimm abandons the Shield. Reed and the Maker infiltrate the palace while everyone else makes the throne look outward.

Under Doomstadt, Peter Parker and Miles find Owen Reece, the Molecule Man, kept alive as the hidden source and conduit of Doom's power. Miles gives the hungry Owen a hamburger he carried from the old universe, a tiny act of generosity with enormous consequences. Later, the Maker betrays Reed, and Owen disposes of him. Reed reaches Doom while Black Panther's battle supplies the final distraction.

The decisive confrontation is not won by a larger machine or a stronger blast. Reed tells Victor that his world is built from fear and envy. Doom argues that Reed failed while he saved what could be saved. Both statements contain truth. Then Doom admits that Reed, given the same power, would have done better. Molecule Man hears the concession and transfers the power. Battleworld ends because its god finally speaks the limit he has spent his life denying.

Reed does not replace one empire with another. Working with Sue, Franklin, Valeria, the Future Foundation and Molecule Man, and drawing directly on Franklin's reality-warping alongside his own new authority, he begins creating universes and restoring the Multiverse. He also heals Victor's face. The gesture is both mercy and challenge. Doom can no longer treat his scar as the complete explanation for what he chooses to be.

What both endings say about Victor

Doom's limitation is not that he lacks the intellect to seize heaven. He proves twice that he can reach it. His limitation is that he imagines stewardship as ownership. In 1984, he cannot hold power without obsessing over who might take it. In 2015, he cannot build a family, society or history that is free to contradict him. The first godhood collapses because he fears loss. The second collapses because he finally names envy.

Part II: The Road to Secret Wars 2015

It is possible to open Secret Wars #1 cold and understand the surface action. It is not the best way to read the event. Hickman's finale pays off ideas seeded in his Fantastic Four work, then developed as two interlocking Avengers narratives. Avengers expands outward toward cosmic systems. New Avengers contracts inward around the Illuminati's moral failure. The books meet at the end of everything.

Prologue: Solve Everything

Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #1 to #5, Fantastic Four #570 to #588, FF #1 to #23, and Fantastic Four #600 to #611

Collected in: Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Volumes 1 to 4. These books preserve the intended movement between Fantastic Four and FF once both titles run together.

What happens: Reed builds the Bridge and contacts alternate versions of himself who formed the Council of Reeds. These Reeds claim to have solved the problems of their worlds, often by sacrificing family life, compromise and ordinary human attachment. Reed rejects their model. The Future Foundation develops as an institution for solving tomorrow's problems, while Valeria forms a complicated relationship with Doom.

Why it matters later: The Council establishes the multiversal scale and asks the question that Secret Wars eventually answers: what separates a brilliant saviour from an enlightened dictator? It also frames family as the limit Reed accepts and Doom resents. The final pages of Secret Wars #9, with the Future Foundation creating new realities, complete this project.

Reading status: Thematic foundation. You can follow the Incursion plot without it, but Reed, Doom, Valeria and the ending become much richer if you read it.

Phase I: Two Avengers Books, One Crisis

Avengers #1 to #5 and New Avengers #1 to #6

What happens: Captain America and Iron Man expand the Avengers into a planetary response system. At the same time, Black Panther witnesses an Incursion over Wakanda and summons the Illuminati: Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor and Beast. They learn that parallel Earths are colliding and that the destruction of one Earth can save both universes.

What to watch: The two titles offer opposite moral scales. Avengers says the team must become larger to meet larger threats. New Avengers shows a smaller group hiding the same threat because the available solutions are politically and morally unbearable.

Phase II: The System Reveals Itself

Avengers #6 to #17 and New Avengers #7

Collected in: Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 2.

What happens: The White Event, Starbrand, Nightmask, Ex Nihilo and the Builders expand the cosmic machinery around Earth. The Avengers begin to see that their planet has become a pressure point in a larger design. Wakanda and Atlantis move toward war, making the Illuminati's cooperation increasingly unstable.

Why it matters: The Incursions are not an isolated scientific puzzle. They occur inside a universe already entering systemic crisis. Hickman's structure keeps asking whether expansion creates resilience or merely gives catastrophe more connections to travel through.

Phase III: Infinity

Infinity #1 to #6, Avengers #18 to #23, and New Avengers #8 to #12

What happens: The Avengers leave Earth to fight the Builders while Thanos attacks the exposed planet. The Illuminati confront the Black Order, protect their secrets and face another Incursion. Black Bolt detonates the Terrigen Bomb. The cosmic and clandestine books now run through the same war.

Best practical advice: Read the collected edition instead of improvising a single-issue sequence. It places the core Infinity chapters beside the relevant Avengers issues and prevents the campaign from turning into a continuity shuffle.

Phase IV: The Moral Collapse

Avengers #24 to #34 and New Avengers #13 to #23

Collected in: Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 4.

What happens: The Illuminati meet the Great Society, heroes from another Earth who have also been surviving Incursions. The confrontation removes the comforting idea that the other world will always be empty or monstrous. The Illuminati build planet-killing weapons, but only Namor can press the detonator when the moment arrives. The group fractures under the decision. Namor then forms the Cabal with Thanos, Black Swan, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Terrax and Maximus to continue destroying Earths.

Why it matters: This is the ethical centre of the road to Secret Wars. Saving one's own world no longer looks like heroism when the cost has a face. The saga stops asking who has the correct equation and asks who can live with pressing the button.

Phase V: Time Runs Out

Avengers #35 to #44 and New Avengers #24 to #33

Collected in: Avengers by Jonathan Hickman: The Complete Collection Vol. 5 or Avengers: Time Runs Out Volumes 1 to 4.

What happens: The story jumps eight months. The Avengers hunt the Illuminati. Nations fracture. The Cabal's brutality is exposed. Hank Pym returns with the truth about the Beyonders, Molecule Men and the purpose of the Incursions. Doom, Doctor Strange and Molecule Man run a separate campaign across time and realities. Earth-616 and Earth-1610 become the last worlds.

The essential revelation: The Beyonders placed a Molecule Man in every universe as a living bomb. Their planned simultaneous detonation would end the Multiverse. Doom and Owen Reece kill alternate Molecule Men early, reducing the available explosives, then use the gathered power against the Beyonders. The plan succeeds too late to prevent universal collapse, but it gives Doom enough power to salvage fragments.

Do not skip #33: the identity of Rabum Alal, the Great Destroyer worshipped by the Black Swans, is revealed here rather than in Secret Wars itself. Anyone who jumps straight to the event misses the reveal entirely.

Finale: There Is Only Battleworld

Secret Wars #0 to #9

Collected in: Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić.

What happens: The final Incursion destroys the last universes. Battleworld is revealed eight years later. The rafts open, Doom's official history fractures, the domains rebel and Reed reaches Molecule Man. The Multiverse is remade.

Issue #0: The Free Comic Book Day chapter is a prologue about the Future Foundation and the life raft. It is useful, short and included in the main collected edition, but #1 is the formal beginning of the event.

What can be skipped?

You do not need to read every 2015 tie-in to understand the main event. The domains are designed as story engines, so most tie-ins explore a local variation rather than advance Reed's campaign against Doom. Read them after Secret Wars #2, when the political structure has been introduced, and before #7 if you want the rebellion to feel geographically larger.

The Discovery File: Six Ideas You Must Understand

1. Incursions

An Incursion begins when two universes overlap around their Earths. A red sky marks the collision. If neither Earth is destroyed before the countdown ends, both universes die. If one Earth is destroyed, both universes survive. The mechanism turns planetary murder into a mathematically effective solution, which is why the crisis destroys the Illuminati morally before it destroys their world physically.

2. Black Swans

Black Swans are agents raised within a religion serving Rabum Alal, the Great Destroyer. Yabbat Ummon Turru, the Black Swan captured by the Illuminati, understands Incursions and treats the death of Earths as necessary work. In New Avengers #33, Doom is revealed as Rabum Alal, a role he created during his campaign against the Beyonders. The revelation recasts another cult around Victor's need to turn strategy into myth.

3. Mapmakers, Black Priests and Ivory Kings

These groups are not interchangeable. Mapmakers mark and strip worlds. Black Priests use language that can alter reality and destroy worlds as part of their response to collapse. The Ivory Kings are the Beyonders themselves, entities operating from beyond the Multiverse. Their different methods reveal that the Incursions have produced an ecosystem of destroyers, opportunists and desperate custodians.

4. Molecule Men

Every universe contains an Owen Reece. The Beyonders designed these Molecule Men as identical living bombs. Kill one before its scheduled detonation and its universe dies early; trigger them together and everything dies at once. Doom's campaign with the original Owen turns the bombs back against their makers. On Battleworld, Molecule Man becomes the hidden battery beneath the throne and the person with the final power to choose Doom or Reed.

5. The Beyonders

The 2015 Beyonders are a race outside the Multiverse, not simply the single flamboyant being from the 1984 event. Marvel later connected and revised the relationship between these concepts, but Hickman's story requires one clear distinction: the original Beyonder staged a contest, while the Beyonders behind the Incursions planned a controlled multiversal extinction.

6. The Council of Reeds

The Council is a multiversal organisation of Reed Richards variants who abandoned or subordinated family life in order to solve everything. Mainline Reed walks away from them. That decision is the moral seed of Secret Wars. Doom builds a world by forcing everyone into his solution. Reed rebuilds worlds with family, students and collaborators. If you want a gentler version of the same argument on screen, Everything Everywhere All At Once asks precisely this question about what a person owes the family they could have optimised away.

The Two Survival Rafts Explained

The rafts are often confused because Miles Morales, the Maker and the Cabal emerge from one vessel while the Earth-616 heroes emerge from another. They are not two compartments of the same project. They represent two competing models of survival.

The Earth-616 life raft

Reed and Valeria's continuity vessel

Reed Richards, Valeria and the Future Foundation design a craft to survive the final Incursion. The plan is not to defeat universal death at the last second, but to preserve enough people and knowledge to begin again. Damage during launch separates the section containing Sue, Franklin, Valeria, Ben and others. The surviving compartment carries Reed, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Jane Foster's Thor, Star-Lord, Phoenix Cyclops and Peter Parker into stasis.

Doctor Strange finds the vessel on Battleworld but does not open it for eight years. Its passengers become a preserved contradiction inside Doom's reality: people who remember Reed, the old Multiverse and a history in which Victor was not God.

The Earth-1610 life raft

The Maker and the Cabal's stolen design

Ultimate Reed Richards, now the Maker, adapts designs taken from Earth-616 and escapes with the Cabal. The passengers include Thanos, Namor, Black Swan, Maximus, Terrax, Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive. Miles Morales slips aboard shortly before the final collision and survives unseen; a minority of readings put him on the 616 raft instead, but Strange's own dialogue supports the Cabal vessel.

This raft preserves power rather than a representative future. Its occupants have already destroyed worlds in the name of survival. Yet Miles, the accidental passenger, carries the ordinary decency that proves decisive when he feeds Molecule Man.

The rafts are Hickman's moral miniature. Reed tries to preserve a community capable of rebuilding. The Maker preserves a cadre capable of winning. Neither plan works as intended, and the person no plan selected, Miles Morales, changes the outcome through kindness rather than calculation.

Part III: Battleworld Atlas

Battleworld is not a loose pile of alternate universes. It is an empire with a theology, chain of command, border policy, penal system and creation myth. Most people believe Doom saved and made all existence. Few know that other realities ever existed. Travel between domains requires permission, and unauthorised movement can bring the Thor Corps. A baron may exercise enormous local power, but the title exists only because Doom recognises it.

Doomstadt: the centre that explains the map

Doomstadt is the capital and symbolic centre of Battleworld. Castle Doom rises around the roots of Yggdrasil. Courts, the Foundation's scientific work, Doom's family and the machinery of rule are concentrated here. A Galactus stands guard. Arcade operates the Killiseum. Beneath the public monument to Molecule Man, the real Owen Reece lives hidden from the population.

Doomstadt is the regime's central lie in stone. The statue says Molecule Man is dead and honoured. The chamber below reveals that the supposedly self-sufficient god depends upon a concealed partner. The capital therefore performs the same function as Doom's mask: it displays absolute authority while hiding the wound, debt and fear that authority cannot acknowledge.

How to read the registry

A caution before the table

The map printed in Secret Wars #2 carries 41 numbered slots, but it is a piece of in-fiction propaganda rather than a tidy gazetteer, and three of those slots were left Classified and filled in later. Some places fans routinely call domains, including Doomstadt and Doomgard, are locations and institutions rather than numbered territories. Domain 20 is subdivided on the map itself, into Attilan, a Marvel 616 sector, a Marvel 1616 sector and Monster Metropolis. The published labels also differ from common usage: number 18 reads The Eye of Agamotto, and number 41 appears as The Wall in some transcriptions and The Shield in others.

The registry below therefore lists 41 mapped territories as most readers use the term, while flagging the cases where the comic itself is looser than the fandom. Where a domain's ruler was never established in a published story, it says so rather than inventing a baron.

Rulers changed during individual tie-ins. "No confirmed baron" means the published map or story did not establish a conventional, Doom-appointed ruler clearly enough to state one. "Not confirmed in a published story" flags a ruler widely repeated by fans but not verifiable from the comics. Earth numbers identify the reality supplying a domain only where the tie-ins clearly established one; a blank or mixed source is not an error.

Greenland: why Domain 1 matters

Greenland looks like an entertaining gamma wilderness, but its position in Doom's system is revealing. Baron Red King rules tribes and breeds of Hulks until the Captain, a Steve Rogers from Earth-16832, is manipulated into killing him by the gamma-mutated Doc Green; the Captain then kills Doc Green as well. Maestro uses the domain as an exile ground. In other words, the empire places inconvenient strength at the edge, fragments it into tribes and lets a local tyrant manage the violence. Readers who know the Hulk chiefly from the films will find the Hulk's chronological appearances across the MCU a useful contrast: the screen version has never been allowed a whole continent of himself.

The domain later supplies Worldbreakers for the assault on Doomstadt. The very power the system isolated becomes a weapon against the centre. That is a recurring Battleworld pattern. Doom's order does not eliminate contradiction. It distributes contradiction into territories and assumes borders will keep it politically harmless.

Thor Corps: police, priesthood and proof of legitimacy

The Thors do more than arrest border-crossers. Their worthiness supplies a sacred visual argument for Doom's rule. If dozens of hammer-bearing gods enforce his decrees, his law appears cosmically validated. Doomgard makes that validation institutional. A person who can lift a Mjolnir may be absorbed into the Corps and taught that Doom's will is the structure holding existence together.

Thors turns the institution into a murder investigation. Evidence of Jane Foster variants and memories of older realities creates a crisis that force cannot solve. Jane Foster eventually persuades the Corps that Doom is not their god. When the Thors rebel, Battleworld loses both police force and religious proof. The empire is not merely outnumbered; it is desacralised.

Barons: local freedom inside an absolute system

Battleworld's barons can wage wars, police populations, control economies and inherit titles. That autonomy has a hard ceiling. Doom may remove, exile or kill a baron. A dispute can be taken to his court. The Thor Corps can destroy a domain judged existentially dangerous. The system resembles federalism only from a distance. Its constitution is one person's continued approval.

This lets the tie-ins explore different kinds of authoritarianism under the same sky. Hyperion annexes neighbours through economic tribute. Regent steals powers in the name of security. Hydra turns ideology into state identity. Robert Kelly uses camps and Sentinels. Jennifer Walters tries to govern Arcadia justly but remains subject to a border law she did not write. Doom permits variety in methods so long as nobody questions the source of legitimacy.

The Shield and the Three Forbidden Territories

Southern exclusion order

The Deadlands, Perfection and New Xandar are not ordinary domains. They contain threats that would consume the rest of Battleworld: Marvel Zombies, Ultron drones and the Annihilation Wave. The Shield separates them from the governed territories, while convicted criminals and political exiles are sentenced to defend it as Hel-Rangers.

The Shield is Ben Grimm

The wall is not simply named after a familiar organisation. It is the transformed body of Ben Grimm. Doom persuaded Ben that he had always been the Shield, placing Reed's closest friend into the role of permanent barrier. Thanos later tells Ben the truth and convinces him to rise. When Ben leaves his post, the wall collapses and the southern horrors enter the war.

The symbolism is ruthless. Doom has turned the Thing, the Fantastic Four member most associated with endurance and loyalty, into a structure that keeps his world intact. Ben's liberation therefore becomes both personal and apocalyptic. He stops holding Doom's reality together.

Battleworld dismantles the Fantastic Four and reassembles the parts as public works: Johnny as the sun, Ben as the wall, Sue as the queen, Reed deleted from the record.

Deadlands

The remains of a Marvel Zombies reality occupy Domain 38. Super-powered infected roam beyond normal law. Black Panther can command them because he is King of the Dead, turning Doom's discarded nightmare into part of the final assault. The Deadlands embody appetite without government, a distorted opposite to Doom's control.

Perfection

Domain 39 belongs to Lord Ultron and an apparently endless machine swarm. Its name expresses Ultron's usual delusion: organic inconsistency has been replaced with mechanised uniformity. Perfection is what Doom's language of order looks like after personality itself has been removed.

New Xandar

Domain 40 is a version of Xandar overrun by the Annihilation Wave. The Bakian family, Nova survivors, Adam Warlock and scattered cosmic figures move through its ruins while Infinity Stones become survival tools and objects of predation. New Xandar gives the atlas a civilian ground level often missing from the main event.

Siege at the edge

Abigail Brand commands the Shield in Siege, with Kang and Leah as her seconds and a garrison that includes America Chavez, Kate Bishop and Illyana Rasputin. Her Hel-Rangers know that failure does not cost one city. It opens the whole world to three apocalypses. Their story clarifies the uncomfortable truth behind Doom's empire: some of its defensive work is genuinely necessary, even when its justice and theology are lies.

What Survived After Battleworld Collapsed?

There is no simple list in which each of the 41 territories becomes a nation in the restored Marvel Universe. Battleworld's political map collapses. Reed, Franklin and Molecule Man generate new realities, allowing the Multiverse to return in revised form. Some people cross over directly. Some tie-in worlds continue as recreated universes. Some concepts are reintroduced later without a clean claim that the physical domain survived intact.

Miles Morales and his family

Miles is integrated into the restored Prime Universe. Molecule Man also restores his mother, Rio, in repayment for Miles's kindness. This is the most important permanent population transfer from the Ultimate Universe into Earth-616 following the event.

Reed, Sue and the Future Foundation

The Richards family, the Future Foundation and Molecule Man continue beyond ordinary space while Franklin imagines new universes and Reed gives them structure. They are absent from Earth not because Doom erased them, but because the work of rebuilding continues.

Doctor Doom

Victor returns with his face healed. The experience leads into a period in which he attempts heroism and later takes up Iron Man's mantle in Infamous Iron Man. Weirdworld and Singularity

The Maker

Molecule Man cuts the Maker apart during the finale, yet Ultimate Reed is alive again in the restored Multiverse without any published explanation of how. The safest lore conclusion: the restored Multiverse preserves survivors, legacies and recreated realities, not Battleworld's full feudal state. Saying that every domain was erased is too absolute. Saying that all 41 survived as the same territories is equally wrong.

The Hidden Design of Secret Wars

Hickman's saga is often described as a story about the death and rebirth of the Multiverse. That is accurate but incomplete. It is also a long argument about institutions built by intelligent men who fear failure.

The Council of Reeds sacrifices family to solve everything. The Illuminati sacrifices transparency because the public cannot be trusted with the impossible decision. The Cabal sacrifices moral restraint because hesitation may kill universes. The Beyonders sacrifice existence to complete an experiment. Doom saves fragments, then sacrifices consent so those fragments cannot reject him.

Reed's answer is not that intelligence should withdraw. He still builds the Bridge, the raft and the machinery of new universes. The difference is collaborative. Sue, Franklin, Valeria, the Future Foundation and Molecule Man participate in creation. New worlds are not provinces in Reed's empire. They are released as realities with futures of their own.

That is why Doom's final concession matters more than his defeat in battle. Victor has always believed Reed's objections are envy, weakness or hypocrisy. When he admits Reed would have done better, he recognises that power and authorship are not the same as care. Molecule Man does not merely switch sides. He responds to Doom's first honest evaluation of the world he made.

The two Secret Wars therefore form one of Marvel's best accidental symmetries. The 1984 event proves Doom can steal godhood. The 2015 event gives him time to turn godhood into policy. Both end at the same boundary: Victor can imagine a world saved by Doom, but not a world that no longer needs to kneel before him.

Secret Wars Questions Answered

Are Secret Wars 1984 and Secret Wars 2015 in the same continuity?

Yes. Both affect the main Marvel continuity, but they take place on different Battleworlds created by different powers for different reasons. The 2015 event deliberately echoes the original name and Doom's earlier theft of the Beyonder's power.

Did Doctor Doom create the 2015 Battleworld alone?

No. Doom deserves credit for conceiving and executing the campaign that killed the Beyonders and for shaping the salvaged world. Molecule Man was essential as weapon, conduit and continuing source of power. Doctor Strange was also Doom's partner during the catastrophe and helped establish order afterwards. Battleworld's religion compresses that collaboration into the simpler claim that Doom alone saved everything.
