Special Tasks Group Mission File // Priority: Tuchanka
How to Save Mordin Solus in Mass Effect 3
The exact trilogy-wide route that lets Mordin survive the Shroud, join the Crucible project and escape his famous sacrifice.
Can Mordin survive Mass Effect 3?
Yes, but only through one highly specific route. Wrex must be dead, Eve must die, the genophage cure must remain sabotaged and Shepard must persuade Mordin to walk away from the Shroud.
You cannot save Mordin while also curing the genophage in an unmodified version of the game.
Mordin Solus usually dies repairing the sabotaged Shroud and dispersing the genophage cure across Tuchanka. His final ascent completes the moral reckoning that began when he helped modify the genophage years earlier.
There is one way to stop that ascent.
The route requires Shepard to create the bleakest possible political future for the krogan. Wrex, their strongest reformer, must already be dead. Eve, the female leader capable of restraining Wreav, must also die. Only then can Shepard convince Mordin that releasing the cure would give a violent warlord the population needed to launch another galactic conflict.
The complete route at a glance
Wrex must die on Virmire
Allow the Virmire confrontation to end with Urdnot Wrex's death. Urdnot Wreav will eventually become the dominant krogan leader.
Mordin must survive, but Maelon's data must be destroyed
Complete Mordin's loyalty mission, destroy Maelon's genophage research and later keep Mordin alive during the Suicide Mission.
Hide the Dalatrass's sabotage
During Priority: Tuchanka, keep the sabotage secret from the krogan and persuade Mordin to leave the Shroud damaged.
The four conditions that must all be true
- Wrex is dead and Wreav leads Clan Urdnot.
- Maelon's data was destroyed, causing Eve to die during Priority: Tuchanka.
- Mordin survived the Mass Effect 2 Suicide Mission.
- Shepard has enough Reputation to unlock the final persuasion option.
Step 1: Make Wreav the krogan leader
During the Virmire mission in the first Mass Effect, Wrex confronts Shepard after learning that Saren possesses a cure for the genophage. Saving Wrex creates the strongest possible future for the krogan, but it permanently blocks Mordin's survival route.
To save Mordin later, Wrex must die during this confrontation. Wreav then rises to lead Clan Urdnot.
This distinction matters because the two brothers represent radically different krogan futures. Wrex wants to unify the clans, rebuild Tuchanka and curb the cycle of revenge. Wreav regards the Reaper War as a temporary interruption before krogan expansion resumes.
Route failure: Wrex survives
If Wrex reaches Mass Effect 3, Mordin believes the krogan have a credible leader capable of using the cure responsibly. Shepard cannot persuade him to preserve the sabotage.
At the Shroud, Mordin will either cure the genophage and die, or Shepard must shoot him to stop the cure.
Players seeking the more hopeful krogan outcome should follow the opposite route and use our guide to save Wrex during the Virmire confrontation.
Step 2: Destroy Maelon's research
During Mordin's Mass Effect 2 loyalty mission, Mordin: Old Blood, Shepard discovers that Maelon has conducted brutal experiments on living krogan while searching for a genophage cure.
At the end of the mission, Shepard must decide whether to preserve or destroy Maelon's research.
- Save the data: Mordin later uses it to stabilise Eve, allowing her to survive Priority: Tuchanka.
- Destroy the data: Critical medical information is lost, and Eve dies while helping produce the cure.
Destroying the data is essential for Mordin's survival route. Eve's death removes the second leader capable of containing Wreav.
Why Eve changes Mordin's decision
Eve is more than a patient or biological source for the cure. Her birth name is Bakara, and she emerges as a political counterweight to the male clan leaders.
Wreav possesses military authority, but Eve commands the loyalty of the surviving krogan females. She can threaten Wreav with resistance, civil conflict and the refusal of krogan women to support another age of conquest.
If Eve survives, Mordin sees a viable check on Wreav's ambition. If she dies, Wreav stands almost unopposed. That political vacuum gives Shepard the argument needed to change Mordin's mind.
Route failure: Maelon's data was saved
Eve will survive the cure procedure. Her survival prevents Shepard from persuading Mordin to abandon the cure, even when Wreav leads the krogan.
Step 3: Keep Mordin alive in Mass Effect 2
Mordin must survive the Suicide Mission at the Collector Base. Complete his loyalty mission, upgrade the Normandy and assign the team correctly.
Mordin has a relatively low defensive value during the final hold-the-line calculation. Sending him to escort the rescued Normandy crew back to the ship is one of the safest assignments.

If Mordin died during the Suicide Mission, salarian STG scientist Padok Wiks fills his role in Mass Effect 3. Wiks can also be persuaded to abandon the cure under the same political conditions, but saving him will not produce the Mordin Solus War Asset.
Step 4: Build enough Reputation
The required dialogue choice is controlled by Shepard's Reputation. You do not need to play a purely Renegade Shepard.
Mass Effect 3 combines Paragon and Renegade progress into an overall Reputation system for major persuasion checks. A largely Paragon Shepard can therefore save Mordin after making the required trilogy decisions.
Complete side missions, speak to the crew, resolve disputes and make Reputation-building choices before beginning Priority: Tuchanka. A save created moments before the Shroud cannot repair an underdeveloped Reputation score.
Step 5: Conceal the Shroud sabotage
Before Priority: Tuchanka, the salarian Dalatrass reveals that the Shroud was secretly sabotaged. She offers salarian military support if Shepard allows the cure to fail.
During the convoy sequence on Tuchanka, Shepard receives an opportunity to reveal the sabotage to the krogan leadership.
Keep the information secret.
Revealing the plot warns Mordin early enough to prepare a countermeasure. Once warned, he will repair the sabotage, disperse the cure and die in the destruction of the Shroud.
Route failure: Shepard exposes the sabotage
Revealing the Dalatrass's scheme during the convoy locks Mordin onto the cure path. The later persuasion route will no longer save him.
Step 6: Choose the persuasion option at the Shroud
Continue through Priority: Tuchanka. Shepard's team activates the ancient maw hammers, summons Kalros and uses the colossal thresher maw to bring down the Reaper Destroyer guarding the Shroud.
While Shepard fights through Tuchanka, Mordin finishes preparing the cure. Because Maelon's data was destroyed, Eve dies from complications during the procedure.
At the base of the damaged Shroud, Mordin detects the sabotage and prepares to travel to the control room. Shepard must challenge the decision and select the coloured persuasion response when it appears.
Shepard's argument rests on three facts:
- Wrex is gone.
- Eve is dead.
- Wreav intends to rebuild krogan power through conquest.
Mordin finally accepts that releasing the cure under these conditions could recreate the crisis that led to the Krogan Rebellions. He agrees to preserve the sabotage and fake his death.
Successful result
Mordin leaves Tuchanka alive. The krogan believe the cure was successfully dispersed, Wreav continues supporting Shepard and the Dalatrass provides salarian military assistance.
Every major outcome explained
What happens after Mordin survives?
Mordin goes into hiding and contributes his scientific expertise to the Crucible project.
The Dalatrass honours her agreement because Shepard allowed the Shroud sabotage to remain intact.
Wreav fails to discover the deception and continues supporting the war against the Reapers. Eve's death and Wreav's leadership reduce portions of the available krogan strength.
This route can produce a strong military return because Shepard gains salarian support while retaining much of the krogan contribution. The exact total depends on other missions, imported decisions and modifiers applied to individual krogan assets.
Pure War Asset arithmetic conceals the real cost. Shepard has preserved Mordin by lying to an entire species about the restoration of its future.
The lore behind Mordin's change of mind
The salarians developed the genophage during the Krogan Rebellions, and the turians deployed it against the krogan. The weapon altered fertility rates so severely that only a tiny fraction of krogan pregnancies resulted in viable births.
Centuries later, krogan biology began adapting. Mordin joined the Special Tasks Group team that modified the genophage so its effects continued at the intended level.
Mordin defended that work through statistics. He argued that the modification prevented another catastrophic krogan expansion while avoiding outright extinction. His certainty begins to fracture during Maelon's experiments and collapses during the Reaper invasion.
Priority: Tuchanka forces him to abandon the emotional shelter of population models. The dead krogan children, the suffering of the females and his own responsibility have become impossible to reduce to projections.
Under Wrex and Eve, curing the genophage becomes Mordin's act of atonement. Under Wreav alone, the calculation changes. Mordin is forced to consider whether atonement performed at the wrong moment could begin another war.
Saving him therefore requires more than passing a dialogue check. Shepard must construct the one political reality in which Mordin's scientific caution defeats his desire for redemption.
Is saving Mordin the best outcome?
For Mordin personally, survival is the obvious reward. For the krogan, it is one of the harshest possible conclusions.
The most hopeful route for Tuchanka follows a different sequence:
- Save Wrex on Virmire.
- Preserve Maelon's data.
- Keep Eve alive.
- Reveal or repair the sabotage.
- Allow Mordin to disperse the cure.
That route costs Mordin his life but leaves the krogan with two reformist leaders and a genuine chance to rebuild without repeating the Krogan Rebellions.
The survival route leaves Wreav in power, Eve dead and the genophage intact. Shepard saves one friend by preserving a system of reproductive punishment against millions.
Frequently asked questions
Can Mordin survive while the genophage is cured?
No. In the unmodified game, Mordin survives Priority: Tuchanka only when the cure remains sabotaged.
Can both Wrex and Mordin survive?
They can both survive the trilogy only when Mordin dies before the Tuchanka storyline or through unofficial modifications. During the standard Mordin survival route, Wrex must already be dead.
Can Eve and Mordin both survive?
No. Eve's survival prevents Mordin from accepting that Wreav lacks an effective political restraint.
Does Shepard need to be Renegade?
No. Shepard needs sufficient overall Reputation. The required historical choices are ruthless, but a predominantly Paragon Shepard can still unlock the persuasion response.
What happens if Mordin died in Mass Effect 2?
Padok Wiks replaces him. Wiks can be persuaded to preserve the sabotage when Wrex and Eve are dead, but he leaves for a quiet colony rather than becoming the Mordin Solus Crucible asset.
Will Wreav discover the cure was sabotaged?
No. Wreav continues believing the genophage was cured and maintains the krogan alliance with Shepard.
