Deleted ROTJ Scene: Luke Skywalker's Creation of the Green Lightsaber

19 June 2023
In the "Star Wars" saga, lightsabers hold a special significance, representing the power and legacy of the Jedi. In the original trilogy's final installment, "Return of the Jedi," a pivotal moment was left out of the final cut—the scene in which Luke Skywalker constructs his own green lightsaber. This deleted scene offers a unique insight into Luke's journey as a Jedi Knight and the symbolism behind his new weapon.

If we take a step back Luke lost his hand and saber at the end of his Duel with Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke and Anakin each losing their arm, rhymes as part of Star Wars Ring Theory.

Luke's creation of his own lightsaber symbolizes his growth as a Jedi Knight. Crafting a lightsaber is an important rite of passage, representing a Jedi's ability to construct and wield the Force as an extension of themselves. By fashioning his green lightsaber, Luke asserts his independence, demonstrating his mastery of the Force and his dedication to the Jedi path.

The color of a Jedi's lightsaber often carries symbolic meaning. In the original trilogy, blue lightsabers are associated with Jedi Knights, while red lightsabers represent the Sith. The introduction of the green lightsaber perhaps signifies Luke's unique path and his balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. It suggests that Luke has embraced both the teachings of the Jedi Order and his own individuality, forging his own destiny as a Jedi.''

Or simply the blue saber against the Tatooine sky didn't work so Lucas chose green to make the Sarlaac Pit scene work.

The deleted scene also emphasizes Luke's connection to his Jedi mentors, particularly Yoda, reinforcing the spiritual guidance and wisdom passed down by the Jedi Masters. Luke's green lightsaber becomes a tangible representation of his bond with his predecessors and the continuation of the Jedi lineage.

The deleted scene featuring Luke Skywalker constructing his green lightsaber in "Return of the Jedi" offers a glimpse into the character's growth, symbolism, and connection to the Jedi Order. While ultimately left on the cutting room floor, the scene carries significant narrative and visual weight.

Extra for Experts: Why Mace Windu had a purple lightsaber

Mace Windu's possession of a purple lightsaber in the "Star Wars" saga is a unique and intriguing aspect of his character. The choice to give Mace Windu a purple lightsaber was a deliberate one, serving both practical and symbolic purposes. From a practical standpoint, the purple lightsaber was created at actor Samuel L. Jackson's request. Jackson, a fan of the franchise, wanted his character to stand out in battle scenes.

However, the purple lightsaber also holds symbolic significance. Bear with us, this is more fan fic theory rather than canon however the color purple is associated with a blending of the light side (blue) and dark side (red) of the Force.

This suggests that Mace Windu, as a Jedi, has a deep understanding of the complexities and nuances of the Force, and that he walks a fine line between the light and dark sides. This unique lightsaber color helps to further distinguish Mace Windu as a formidable and enigmatic Jedi Master within the "Star Wars" universe.
