Looper film and its Time Travel Paradox explained

05 March 2023
Rian Johnson's film 'Looper' is a science fiction movie that explores the concept of time travel and the paradoxes that arise from it.

The movie is set in the year 2044, where time travel has not yet been invented, but it will be in the future. In the future, however, it is illegal to dispose of bodies, so criminal organizations use time travel to send their victims back in time to be killed by specialized assassins called "loopers." The movie follows Joe, a looper who discovers that his next target is his future self, which creates a time travel paradox.

The paradox in 'Looper' is known as the "self-fulfilling prophecy" paradox.

The idea is that if someone travels back in time and changes something, they can create a new timeline or alternate reality, which would create a paradox because they would be altering their own past. However, in 'Looper,' the paradox is different. The movie suggests that if a person travels back in time and does something that affects their own future, they create a paradox, but it is not a true paradox because the future has already happened.

In the movie, Joe's future self (Old Joe) travels back in time to kill the person who will eventually become the head of the criminal organization that runs the loopers in the future. Young Joe, however, fails to kill Old Joe and the two of them start to interact with each other. Young Joe realizes that Old Joe is on a mission to kill the head of the criminal organization, who is a child in the present day. Old Joe believes that by killing the child, he will prevent the rise of the criminal organization and save his future wife from being killed by the organization.

This scenario creates a paradox because if Old Joe succeeds in killing the child, then the criminal organization would never exist, which means that Young Joe would never become a looper, and Old Joe would never have traveled back in time to kill the child in the first place. However, the movie suggests that this is not a true paradox because the future has already happened, and Old Joe's actions are part of that future. Therefore, the paradox is resolved because Old Joe's actions have already happened in the future, and they cannot be changed.

The movie also suggests that time is like a river, and that events cannot be changed, only rerouted. This idea is demonstrated when Old Joe's actions in the past cause a new timeline to be created, but the original timeline still exists. The movie implies that time is a constant, and that it cannot be changed, only altered.

Therefore, the paradox is resolved because the new timeline that Old Joe created is a different version of the future, and the original timeline still exists.

Easy as right?

In conclusion, the time travel paradox in 'Looper' is the self-fulfilling prophecy paradox, which suggests that if someone travels back in time and does something that affects their own future, they create a paradox. However, the movie resolves this paradox by suggesting that time is like a river, and that events cannot be changed, only rerouted.

Therefore, the new timeline that Old Joe creates is a different version of the future, and the original timeline still exists. The movie implies that the future has already happened, and that events in the past are part of that future.
